Ethereum already treats quantum risk as a priority

Vitalik Buterin compared his 2023 roadmap to Ethereum’s new “Strawmap”. Several objectives which were secondary, or even absent three years ago, now occupy the foreground. Not surprisingly, quantum resistance is one of them. This shift extends the post-quantum transition already initiated by Ethereum.

Indeed, the cryptographic signatures that today protect accounts and certain network functions could become vulnerable if sufficiently powerful quantum computers appear. No one knows precisely when this technological breakthrough will take place. Ethereum therefore prefers to prepare the migration before the emergency. The Ethereum Foundation has already created a team dedicated to post-quantum security.

Developers also work on consensusaccounts, data availability and cryptographic proofs. STARKs occupy an important place in this architecture. Why then? Because they allow calculations to be verified without depending on certain cryptographic mechanisms vulnerable to quantum. This anticipation contrasts with a common habit in crypto. That of repairing after the crisis. Here, Ethereum attempts to change the foundations before the attack becomes realistic.

The most unexpected part of the new roadmap concerns AI. Buterin believes that recent advances now allow formal verification to be used more widely. This method seeks to demonstrate mathematically that a program respects the expected properties.

The Ethereum protocol becomes more complex as scalability, privacy, and proof mechanisms evolve. Manually proofreading every detail is no longer enough. Artificial intelligence can assist developers in analyzing specifications, finding errors, and producing more rigorous checks.

Buterin nevertheless sets a clear limit. AI does not replace proof. She helps build it. This is an important nuance for an infrastructure that moves billions of dollars. The network cannot accept a conclusion just because a model says it is correct.

This logic was already visible in Ethereum’s crypto roadmap around Glamsterdam. AI appeared as a tool serving security, confidentiality and auditing, rather than as an autonomous layer making decisions in place of the protocol.

Ethereum is therefore seeking a fairly specific use of artificial intelligence. Not a chatbot grafted to the blockchain. Not a marketing argument. A tool capable of making verifiable an architecture that has become too complex to depend solely on the human eye.

Ethereum wants to scale without sacrificing its foundations

Quantum and AI are not the only changes. The new Strawmap also strengthens confidentiality, simplifies certain specifications and explores more specialized scalability mechanisms. The idea is to no longer seek to indiscriminately increase the capacity of all of Ethereum. Certain infrastructures would rather be optimized for the heaviest uses, such as token transfers, swaps or future confidentiality protocols.

This strategy could also lead Ethereum beyond certain historical bricks of its architecture. The roadmap notably mentions native rollups and reflects on a future where the EVM would no longer necessarily be the sole technical center of gravity of the network.

The bet is ambitious. The more Ethereum prepares for quantum, adds cryptographic proofs and automates the verification of its code, the more difficult its architecture risks becoming to understand. The desire for simplification therefore becomes almost as important as the new technologies themselves.

This is where the convergence between crypto and artificial intelligence takes on concrete meaning. As Vitalik Buterin had already outlined when thinking about the future of Ethereum in the face of the rise of AI, the objective is not to add AI everywhere. This is about using it when the machine can make the system more verifiable without taking control away from users. The post-quantum era of Ethereum is therefore being prepared now, well before the first real shock arrives.
