Nigel Farage has just regained his seat as MP for Clacton with 63% of the vote. His return to Parliament also relaunches an investigation suspended since his resignation in July. The British Standards Commissioner is looking into several million dollars in donations and benefits received from two men linked to crypto.

Farage returns to his seat and his investigation
Nigel Farage left his seat as an MP in July before standing again before the voters of Clacton. The bet worked. The Reform UK leader won the by-election with 63% of the vote. Count Binface, a well-known satirical candidate in the United Kingdom, finished second with 27%. None of the major British parties had fielded a candidate.
Farage therefore returns to Westminster. His investigation too. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards suspended the procedure when he left his seat. She appears active again since her re-election. The reason concerns a possible failure to declare financial interests.
British MPs must register their current financial interests within one month of being elected. Certain benefits received during the previous twelve months must also appear in this declaration. It is on this ground that Farage will have to explain himself.
Two crypto-linked men in the case
Christopher Harborne figures prominently in the case. This businessman linked to the crypto sector is said to have granted around 5 million pounds sterling, or 6.7 million dollars, to Nigel Farage.
Farage initially spoke of a reward for his work in favor of Brexit. He then described the contributions received as gifts given without conditions.
George Cottrell also appears in the investigation. A former collaborator of Farage, he is said to have financed staff as well as part of his security. Cottrell also has ties to a crypto casino and has previous convictions in the United States for fraud. The commissioner will have to determine whether these benefits required a declaration to Parliament.
No conclusion has yet been made. The filing comes as donations linked to digital assets are already occupying Westminster. In January, several British MPs called for much stronger restrictions on cryptocurrency donations.
Concerns mainly relate to the traceability of funds and the possibility of using certain structures to bring foreign money into British politics. Reform UK accepts crypto donations. Not really the best time for a new business.
Crypto has already been with Farage for a long time
Nigel Farage does not discover bitcoin with this investigation. He participated in the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas and has for several years defended a policy that is much more favorable to digital assets. Reform UK has notably proposed reduced taxation on crypto capital gains and legislation intended to protect users against certain bank account closures.
The party had also opened the door to donations in bitcoin and ethereum. Farage even moved from politics to investment. In March, he made a $1.5 million bet on bitcoin through Stack BTC, a British company specializing in BTC treasury. Crypto therefore occupies a real place in its political discourse. This proximity obviously does not constitute an offense. The investigation targets the rules for reporting donations and benefits received by the MP, not his opinions on bitcoin.
