David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, announced an ambitious initiative aimed at encouraging and training Cannes merchants in the integration of cryptos for payments. This approach is part of the city's Web3 strategy, aimed at modernizing and boosting the local economy. However, this initiative does not seem to please everyone and receives strong criticism.
Crypto soon in stores in Cannes?
The Cannes town hall's initiative aims to enable local businesses not to deprive themselves of a potential customer base with a high purchasing capacity by integrating cryptocurrencies as a means of payment. Although these digital currencies are already widespread in certain countries, they still remain marginal in France. Therefore, by offering merchants the possibility of accepting crypto payments, Cannes hopes to optimize this potential and increase the revenue of local businesses.
To support this transition, a training session is planned for Tuesday February 4 at 2:30 p.m. at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. Led by experts, this session will address the technical, legal, accounting and tax aspects of crypto integration. This initiative is particularly relevant as Cannes prepares to host the 8th edition of the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) from June 30 to July 3, 2025, attracting a clientele accustomed to using cryptocurrencies.
Promoting money laundering?
This initiative from Cannes Town Hall is not unanimous among residents and experts. Some fear that using crypto as a payment method could facilitate money laundering and attract illegal activity. In addition, concerns are expressed about the compliance of this project with anti-money laundering and terrorist financing laws.
Additionally, others believe that cryptocurrencies, often considered speculative and unstable, are not suitable for everyday transactions. In addition, this measure could mainly benefit luxury businesses, leaving aside small businesses in Cannes.
