CBDC offers a new monetary era for Russia
Russia is taking a bold step into the financial future by launching the digital ruble. President Putin has indeed just approved the bill on digital currency. This allows the Central Bank of Russia to proceed with the first CBDC pilot with real consumers, starting in August.
Designed to be a method of payment and money transfer, the digital ruble will offer Russians a third form of currency. Bank of Russia Deputy Governor Olga Skorobogatova, however, points out that mass adoption of CBDC not expected to occur until 2025or even 2027.
Use of the digital rouble: A voluntary choice for citizens
Contrary to speculation, the use of the digital ruble will not be mandatory. “The adoption of the CBDC would be a voluntary choice”, explains the Governor of the Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina. So, each individual is free to decide if they want to use this digital currency.
The government’s goal is simple: to make the digital ruble more convenient and economical for individuals and businesses.
CBDC in Russia: A gradual deployment
In Russia, the CBDC implementation process will be gradual. As of August, the central bank will launch a CBDC pilot with real consumers. Previously, trials were conducted in collaboration with 13 local banks.
However, the full implementation of the digital ruble law will only take effect from August 2024. This includes amendments to Russian federal laws regarding bankruptcy and inheritance.
Russia is taking a giant step towards modernizing its monetary system with the adoption of the CBDC. Offering an additional payment option, the digital ruble promises to facilitate transactions and boost the Russian economy.
