Here’s some feedback from bitcoin miner @Wilson_Mining about MicroBT and Bitmain miners.
Bitcoin – Whatsminer > Antminer
In the video below, the miner gives his opinion as to why whatsminers seem to dissipate heat better than their Bitmain-made competitors.
Main parameters of these two miners compared:
Whatsminer M30S+ : 3,400 watts / 100 TH/s / Efficiency of 34 J/TH / Is supposed to operate normally with ambient air whose temperature is between -5°C and 40°C.
Antminer S19K Pro : 2264 watts / 136 TH/s / Efficiency of 23 J/TH / Is supposed to operate normally with ambient air whose temperature is between -5°C and 45°C.
According to @Wilson_Mining, whatsminers are better able to withstand various temperature conditions. They are most reliable when temperatures are very cold or very hot:
“We have seen whatsminers operating well beyond their normal operating temperatures. Conversely, antminers sometimes have difficulty providing the promised efficiency within the temperature range announced by Bitmain.”
After inspection of both machines, it appears that it is probably the higher power of the fans and the arrangement of the heat sinks which make the difference:
“The whatsminer fans are more powerful. They circulate more air, which allows more heat to be dissipated. There is very little to no space between the heatsinks. The same goes for the heatsinks and the chassis. This is the big difference with antminers. »
The heat sinks are conductive elements and the fact that they are in contact with the aluminum chassis, which is another conductive element, allows more heat to be dissipated:
“The walls of whatsminers are very hot while those of antminers are lukewarm. The proximity of the heat sinks to the chassis allows the latter to increase the dissipation surface. »
Furthermore, whatsminers have larger, single-piece heat sinks. Antminer chips have individual heat sinks. So there’s a lot of space that could, but isn’t taken up by heatsinks.
In @Wilson_Mining’s experience, whatsminers always perform better at higher temperatures, even outside of their operating range.
“It is rare for a whatsminer to overheat, unlike antminers. These overheat and often shut down in summer. We expect it. On the other hand, if I see whatsminers overheating, there is something seriously wrong with the container. »
“Whatsminers do not need to be restarted. It makes my life easier. In addition, the repair bill is significantly lower. I won’t have to spend $300 after a year and a half to repair the control board. Not to mention the money lost due to the miner’s arrest. We shouldn’t have to repair a minor every year. If the operating conditions are good, if there is no corrosion, a miner should operate without problems for two, three or four years.”
Bitmain miners generally have better efficiency and are slightly cheaper, but are less reliable:
“When it’s hot, I’ve seen S19 XPs use 3,400 or even 3,500 watts. Which means an efficiency of 23 or 24 J/TW instead of the 21 J/TH announced. The displayed efficiency of whatsminers is a little less good because MicroBT seems to be a little more honest and realistic about the performance of its machines. »
In short, whatsminers are more reliable and deliver what they promise. Wilson now recommends them to his clients.
