AI in the music industry: Music lovers call for restrictions

Artificial intelligence (AI) tends to spread across all sectors of activity. The music industry is not on the fringes of this trend which meets little approval among music lovers. This is shown by recent studies highlighting their desire to limit the use of AI in the music sector.

79% of music lovers advocate protecting music from AI

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in music is not supported by a very large majority of music lovers. This is what a recent study published by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) shows.

Entitled Engaging With Music 2023, the report this study, written on the basis of a survey of 43,000 people across 26 countries around the world, is clear. The use of AI in music has few supporters.

For 79% of music lovers around the world, human creativity remains essential to musical creation. The latter must therefore be protected from the exponential expansion of AI which undermines all creativity. This, thanks to the royalty-free cloning of artists’ voices.

In this context, 74% of participants agreed that AI should not be used to clone or impersonate an artist without their permission. 70% of them are in favor of restrictions on AI in musical creation. And for 64% of respondents, States must play a role by establishing and applying clear limits in the use of this technology.

79% of music fans oppose AI in music creation, favoring authenticity and human creativity

Popular musical authenticity?

Taking note of the results of this survey, Frances Moore, Director General of the IFPI, underlined the clear message from music lovers. Namely, authenticity is important, even vital, for the music industry.

While it is obvious that AI is in tune with the times, its use should not be without brakes. Music fans have strongly expressed their belief that artificial intelligence systems must follow rules.

Therefore, they should only be used in the music sector with prior and explicit permission from the artists and parties involved. This, while ensuring that we are transparent about the elements they include.

It must be said that the results of this survey come at a pivotal moment in the exploration of the role of AI by the music industry. An exploration which is not unanimous among musicians and creators. Paradoxically, AI seems to be gaining influence in the recording industry. This is evidenced by a recent development regarding the Grammy Awards, the series of prestigious music awards, awarded each year to exceptional artists in the music industry, by the Recording Academy. Now, music created by AI is now eligible for the Grammy Awards. A development which is enough to raise eyebrows among many musical artists.
