While the Russian-Ukrainian war is bogged down in its fourth year, a possible meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin in Istanbul could reshape the cards. For the first time in months, kyiv accepts the idea of direct talks. Zelensky announced this Sunday, May 11, that he would wait for Putin on Thursday 15 in Istanbul. However, Ukraine poses a firm condition: no exchange will be done without a total ceasefire, required this Monday. This is a demanding requirement, in a conflict where each diplomatic gesture remains scrutinized.

In short
- Volodymyr Zelensky agrees to meet Vladimir Putin Thursday May 15 in Istanbul for direct negotiations.
- The Ukrainian President conditions this meeting on a complete and immediate ceasefire, on Monday, May 12.
- Vladimir Putin accepts the idea of talks, but rejects any prerequisite before dialogue.
- The meeting remains uncertain: if Moscow refuses the truce required by kyiv, the summit could be compromised.
A meeting on condition: Zelensky's diplomatic bet
Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, said in a message published On X (ex Twitter), Sunday May 11:
I will wait for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope this time, the Russians will not seek excuses.
This announcement marks a turning point in kyiv's diplomatic strategy, hitherto firmly opposed to any dialogue without prerequisite. The Ukrainian president agrees to meet his Russian counterpart on May 15 in Istanbul, but conditions his arrival on an immediate commitment from Moscow: “A complete and durable ceasefire”as of this Monday, May 12. He believes that a truce is “Necessary to lay the foundations of diplomacy”.
Here are the key elements of this diplomatic opening:
- The place and the date: Istanbul, Thursday, May 15, strong geopolitical choice, Turkey already playing a mediation role in the past;
- kyiv's position: acceptance of dialogue, but only if a ceasefire comes into force before the talks;
- The nature of the declaration: Zelensky took the initiative on social networks, by addressing Putin directly;
- The objective displayed: create the conditions necessary for serious negotiations, after months of war of positions.
The proposed, bilateral and direct format recalls the rare mediation attempts observed since 2022. The reference to a truce from May 12 positions Ukraine as the actor who conditions dialogue to immediate appeasement.
By choosing to announce his participation himself, Zelensky strengthens his posture as an active leader in the search for a political solution, while putting pressure on Moscow so that he follows, concretely, to his own proposal.
Between strategic distrust and international pressures: the lines move
For his part, Vladimir Putin laid his own limits. Thus, in a night statement, the president of Russia, one of the member countries of the BRICS, demanded that the discussions have taken place “Without prerequisites”.
He specifies that the question of the ceasefire could be raised, but only if the talks first carried on “The deep causes of the conflict”. This refusal of any prior requirement reinforces the ambiguity of the Russian position, already denounced by several Western chancelleries as a dilatory strategy.
While the eyes are turned towards Istanbul, the voices of the Western allies divergent. Emmanuel Macron, present in kyiv on Saturday alongside his German, British and Polish counterparts, estimated that “Moscow's proposal is a first movement, but which is not enough”. He recalled that “The unconditional ceasefire is not preceded by negotiations, by definition”and insisted on the need for concrete guarantees.
Across the Atlantic, Donald Trump encouraged an immediate meeting, even constantly preliminary, in order to “To determine if an agreement is possible, and if it is not the case, European leaders and the United States will know what to expect”. These positions reveal the complexity of the diplomatic equation: between European prudence and American voluntarism, Ukraine finds itself at the heart of a moving balance.
