Stock market: Ubisoft's half-year figures, the moment of truth is approaching!

In a tense stock market context, Ubisoft, the French video game giant, is preparing to reveal its half-year financial results this Wednesday. The company, which has been facing headwinds for several months, is seeing its shares shaken as rumors of a possible takeover by Tencent intensify.

Ubisoft reveals its results, the title under pressure on the stock market

Ubisoft shares experienced a spectacular fall on the stock market, reaching a historic low of 9.01 euros in September. Since then, the stock has recovered to 13.93 euros, mainly supported by rumors of a possible takeover of the group.

This stock market volatility is explained by several worrying factors. First, recent sales have not reached the objectives set, forcing the company to revise its financial forecasts downwards. The postponement of the highly anticipated “Assassin's Creed Shadows” to February 2024 also shook investor confidence.

Faced with these challenges, Ubisoft launched an ambitious savings plan of 200 million euros in early 2023. While this initiative aims to strengthen the group's profitability, it nevertheless raises questions about its ability to maintain the development of new innovative games.

Tencent hypothesis revives investor interest

Recent rumors of a merger with the Chinese giant Tencent have given new momentum to the stock market. Already a 10% shareholder since 2022, the Asian group could consider a total takeover, according to several market sources.

This takeover perspective was notably highlighted by the Slovak fund AJ Investments, which publicly questioned Ubisoft's management on its strategy. The minority shareholder is demanding clarification on the group's intentions regarding Tencent's approaches.

The Guillemot family, which retains the reins of the company, is maintaining a wait-and-see position for the moment, simply stating that it “regularly examines all its strategic options”. This caution in communication did not fail to fuel speculation on the markets.

The publication of half-year results this Wednesday will constitute a crucial test for Ubisoft. Beyond the figures, investors will be particularly attentive to the strategic perspectives and possible announcements concerning the evolution of the group's shareholding.
