Société Générale issues tokenized green bonds on Ethereum

The French banking giant Société Générale (SocGen) has just achieved a feat: the issuance of 10 million euros of tokenized green bonds on the Ethereum blockchain. The insurers AXA and Generali participated in the operation by purchasing part of these bonds in the form of digital tokens.

Societe Generale attracts Europe with its Tokenized Green Bonds

The tokenization of real-world assets like bonds is booming in the financial sector. Recently, Société Générale (SocGen) did pioneering work by issuing 10 million euros of green bonds tokenized on the Ethereum blockchain. By converting these bond securities into digital tokens, tokenization generates valuable benefits.

First of all, it allows for greater transparency by allowing full traceability of transactions and underlying assets in real time. Investors can therefore follow the movements of their tokenized bonds down to the second.

Tokenization also boosts the speed of transactions and settlements. Blockchain allows almost instantaneous transfers, 24/24 and 7/7, drastically reducing delays. Operational costs are optimized.

Finally, these tokenized bonds gain liquidity and become accessible to a wider range of investors. The fractionalization of large amounts into tokens democratizes this type of investment.

Growing adoption by traditional financial institutions

Convinced by these certain advantages, more and more traditional financial institutions are adopting blockchain and asset tokenization.

The appetite of the insurance juggernaut AXA for these innovations is not weakening. Via its asset management subsidiary AXA IM, the group invested 5 million euros in these tokenized green bonds from Société Générale, even using EURCV, an in-house stablecoin, to settle the operation.

For its part, Generali Investments, the asset management arm of the insurer Generali, also subscribed to this historic issue of tokenized bonds from Société Générale.

These initiatives from traditional finance behemoths demonstrate that blockchain use cases are multiplying in the financial services sector.

According to one study from the firm 21 Invest, 10,000 billion dollars of tokenized assets will circulate within a few years. Attracted by this colossal potential, traditional financial institutions are already positioning themselves.

This iconic issuance of tokenized green bonds marks a crucial step in the appropriation of blockchain by big names in finance. And this is probably just the beginning: with investors’ growing appetite for these new asset formats, the tokenization of traditional securities has a bright future.
