Ripple touts Crossmark, its new wallet for XRP Ledger

RippleX, the developer arm of blockchain company Ripple, has unveiled an exciting new development for XRP holders. This is Crossmark, a web wallet very similar in functionality to Ethereum’s MetaMask wallet. It is the fruit of the collaboration between Ripple and Crossmark.

Ripple: More autonomy and security for XRP holders

Ripple had focused its wallet approach on mobile with XUMM from XRP Labs. This did not allow certain holders to develop fully in the management of their assets. Crossmark which is a browser extension should allow to fill some gaps of XUMM. This new wallet thus introduces a new paradigm by integrating features similar to MetaMask. Except that these are specifically adapted to the XRP Ledger.

First, the use of web browser extensions allows Crossmark to provide a seamless and user-friendly experience for XRP holders. In fact, they can effortlessly manage their XRP transactions and interact with decentralized applications (dApps).

As writing Crossmark, new projects built on the XRP Ledger need a first browser wallet. As more developers and users move away from the Ethereum ecosystem, this demand will only increase, developers say.

Second, Crossmark emphasizes user security by implementing an encrypted keychain mechanism. This means that sensitive keys are securely stored locally on the computer of the user. Funds and personal data are thus more secure.

Would Crossmark have the same success as MetaMask

Ripple developers have clearly recognized the potential of a directly in-browser wallet such as MetaMask. Both wallets share a fairly similar feature set. For example, you have the possibility to sign transactions and switch between different networks on the XRP Ledger. Developers now have a powerful tool to integrate XRP Ledger functionality into web applications. The ecosystem is therefore more favoured, diversified and inclusive in terms of development solutions.

Ripple is no doubt looking to replicate on XRP Ledger the success that we have seen with MetaMask on Ethereum. However, the announcement has yet to produce visible results on the price of XRP. Perhaps the announcement of a launch date will increase the price?
