After conquering the world of luxury, blockchain technology is now entering the world of space exploration. Accused of having “invented its lunar missions”, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) wants to use blockchain to authenticate its next Artemis missions. At his side, two powerful entities. Details below.
Authentication of NASA moon landings to reassure
To this day, NASA has never been able to prove that the moon landing missions it carried out between 1969 and 1979 were not “invented”. Now, the agency is teaming up with startup Lonestar and the Digital Isle of Man to create a way to prove the moon landing using blockchain technology.
The partners will implement a long-term storage solution for lunar data based on blockchain. These are data cubes to be sent to the Moon for recording on the blockchain data related to human presence on the Moon.
The astronauts sent will interact with this lunar data storage solution to record their interactions with the planet on the blockchain and in real time. The data secured in the cubes can therefore be verified from Earth. Based on the immutability of the blockchain, this solution will work with solar energy and will not require any particular infrastructure to be operational.
Testing of the lunar data storage solution in February 2024
According to NASA’s announcement, the secure data cubes will be sent to the Moon in February 2024. The agency also plans to launch the Artemis 2 mission in November 2024, which will not strictly speaking be a moon landing. The astronauts will orbit the moon before returning to Earth. The solution could therefore be deployed first in orbit.
After this last test, the government will authorize the launch of the Artemis 3 mission in 2025. It will be a moon landing mission. We hope that testing the lunar data cube solution will work. Its Artemis 3 mission in 2025 will be an opportunity for NASA to prove to the world that it has sent humans to the Moon. Otherwise, conspiracy theories will continue to undermine the United States’ reputation for space exploration.
