A trader committed nearly $98 million to a bitcoin rally with leverage of 40 on Hyperliquid. At the time of the statement published on October 18, a drop of only 1.6% threatened to trigger the liquidation of this particularly risky position.

In brief
- A trader bets nearly $98 million on the rise of Bitcoin with a leverage of 40 on Hyperliquid.
- This position is based on just $2.85 million in margin.
- A 1.6% drop in bitcoin could trigger its liquidation, estimated at $79,828.
- High leverage exposes the trader to rapid losses despite small market fluctuations.
- The account already shows nearly $9.8 million in cumulative losses over seven days.
A position of 98 million supported by 2.85 million
The observed account controlled 1205.31 BTC through a perpetual contract. His long position had a notional value of $97.87 million, for an average entry price of $81,913.80. The trader was therefore banking on bitcoin progressing above this threshold.
The use of a lever of 40 explain the gap between the size of the bet and the capital actually mobilized. Here are the main data recorded on the account:
- An exhibition of 97.87 million dollars;
- About $2.85 million deposited on the sidelines;
- An effective leverage of 34.33;
- An estimated liquidation price of $79,828;
- An unrealized loss of $866,467;
- Nearly $86,952 already paid in financing fees.
The figure of 98 million therefore does not correspond to the personal amount that the trader risks losing. It designates the total value of its exposure after application of leverage. The direct loss is mainly based on the margin committed, even if the previous operations of the account can increase the overall balance sheet.
At the time of observation, bitcoin was trading around $81,117 on Bitstamp. Only $1,289 separated its price from the liquidation level, a gap of approximately 1.59%. However, the market has evolved since this capture and the position may have been reduced, strengthened or closed.
The 40 lever leaves almost no margin for error
A perpetual contract allows you to speculate on the price of an asset without an expiration date. With a long position, the trader wins if BTC advances and loses if it declines. Leverage multiplies these variations in relation to the capital employed.
At 40 times the stake, an unfavorable variation of a few points is enough to absorb most of the margin. The unrealized loss of $866,467 already represented a negative return of 30.4% on committed funds. The account also had no additional available margin at the time of the statement.
The position used an isolated margin mode. In this system, the collateral allocated to the bet remains separate from the rest of the portfolio. A liquidation therefore mainly threatens the sum reserved for this operation, rather than all the assets possibly held in the account.
Hyperliquid, however, is not based solely on the last price displayed by a spot platform. Its mechanism takes into account a reference price, the margin level and the rules specific to the protocol. The threshold of $79,828 thus constituted an estimate likely to change if the trader added collateral or reduced his exposure.
The account had already lost 9.8 million in one week
Statistics published by Hyperbot show that the difficulties went beyond this single position. Over seven days, the account showed a cumulative loss of almost $9.78 million and a maximum decline of 78.77% from its previous high.
Its history included 3763 trades, but only 16.67% of them resulted in a gain. The portfolio also remained 100% exposed to the rise in bitcoin, with no short position likely to cushion a further decline. These numbers describe an aggressive strategy, but they do not identify its actual owner.
A forced closure of such a position could briefly increase selling pressure. The system should sell part or all of the exposure in order to cover losses. Its effect on the market, however, would depend on the depth of the order book, the speed of liquidation and the available buyers.
This bet above all illustrates the risk of extreme leverage. An exposure close to $100 million may be based on less than $3 million of margin, but an ordinary change in the price of bitcoin can then quickly wipe out the capital committed. The $79,828 level remains the main threshold to watch as long as the position remains open and unchanged.
