On October 29, hackers that the FBI attributes to North Korea emptied Binance hot wallets in around twenty minutes: $6.3 billion, the largest crypto theft ever recorded. Binance assures that its customers will not lose anything and says it has already filled 95% of the hole with its own funds. But the entry point, an engineer’s infected laptop, is the same as that of the attacks that target individual accounts every day. This is the risk that OKX covers with OKX Shield, free of charge.

In brief
- Binance lost around $6.3 billion on October 29, including $3.8 billion in ether, after an engineer’s job was compromised; the FBI accuses the North Korean group TraderTraitor.
- Binance users cannot bear the loss: the exchange says it has replaced 95% of stolen assets as of November 2 and reopened withdrawals on November 1.
- OKX was not affected, according to its founder Star Xu, who recognizes that no platform can guarantee absolute security.
- OKX Shield can reimburse losses linked to a takeover of your account by a third party: up to €100,000 as standard, €250,000 in VIP 1 to 3, €500,000 in VIP 4 to 6.
What happened at Binance on October 29?
A flash theft on the platform’s hot wallets, not on customer accounts. The attack started at 8:05 p.m. UTC on the XRP Ledger, then spread to Ethereum, Bitcoin, and seven other networks. Approximately $3.8 billion in ether18,270 bitcoins (1.5 billion) and 628 million in TRON were gone in around twenty minutes.
According to Binance’s preliminary investigation, it all started from a DevOps engineer’s laptop. There, the attackers gained access to an internal service that submits withdrawals, and then sent unauthorized orders. Binance says it has found no evidence of private key leaks. THE FBI designated the group on October 31 TraderTraitoralready accused of the theft of 1.5 billion from Bybit in 2025.
The response was rapid. Tether froze about $1.57 billion linked to the theft and Circle $800 million, according to Reuters. Binance suspended withdrawals, then made up the loss with its cash, part of its futures insurance fund and its SAFU fund. His co-CEO Richard Teng summed it up in one sentence: “ our users will not bear the financial impact » (our users will not bear the financial impact). Withdrawals reopened on November 1 on 15 networks.
Can an exchange guarantee that it will never be hacked?
No, and the founder of OKX is the first to say so. In a message published on X on November 2, Star Xu indicated that OKX was not affected by the incident, while recognizing that no platform can claim to be safe from attack. Its teams track stolen funds, identify suspicious addresses and take available measures to prevent their laundering via the OKX exchange and DEX aggregator.
Star Xu also called for a common response from the sector: “ We need a real-time alert system that allows participants to share information immediately » (we need a real-time alert system to share information immediately), he wrote on Reuters.
What you need to remember is that there are two very distinct risks. The first is the hacking of the platform itself, as with Binance: the loss is then assumed by the exchange. In Europe, it is even a legal obligation. The regulations Mica makes the service provider responsible to its clients for the loss of cryptoassets due to an incident attributable to it (article 75). OKX Europe Limited has been MiCA approved by the Maltese MFSA authority since January 27, 2025, with a passport valid in France.
The second risk is more banal and much more frequent: someone takes control of your account. A fake site that collects your credentials, spyware on your phone, a hijacked SIM card. The platform is not hacked, so there is no obligation to refund. And this is exactly the Binance scenario, but on an individual scale: a compromised device which provides access to withdrawals.
What does OKX Shield cover, and what does it not cover?
OKX Shield covers the takeover of your account by a third party, not transactions you validate yourself. The program is free and open to verified individual OKX Europe accounts. The limit depends on the account level: €100,000 for a standard account, regardless of the volume traded, €250,000 in VIP 1 to 3 and €500,000 in VIP 4 and above
OKX presents it as a discretionary program, which is neither insurance nor a guarantee of deposits: each request is examined, and only one approved request is possible per client (OKX Shield FAQ).
| Situation | Covered by OKX Shield? |
| Phishing: a third party connects from an unusual environment and withdraws your funds | Yes, subject to review |
| Malware, Trojan horse or remote control of your device, without your permission | Yes, subject to review |
| SIM swap used to take control of account | Yes, subject to review |
| Transfer that you initiate or validate yourself, even if deceived (fake support, scam) | No |
| Trading losses, market movements | No |
| Funds on OKX Wallet, OKX Pay, in self-custody or in DeFi | No |
| Hacking of the platform itself, Binance type | Outside the scope of Shield: the loss relates to exchange (article 75 of MiCA) |
Two conditions weigh heavily. Shield must be Active at the time of the incident: if you deactivate mandatory protection, it goes Inactive until everything is restored. And the application must be filed within 72 hours following the last unauthorized operation.
To activate OKX Shield, launched in Europe at the end of September (our presentation), and protect your account up to €100,000 (€500,000 for VIP 4 and above), it’s over here.
How to activate OKX Shield?
From the app’s Security Center, OKX first checks account eligibility and the status of your devices, then requests six protections:
- A verified (KYC) account and in good standing.
- A current device and associated devices that pass security screening.
- A pass key activated.
- Face verification for large withdrawals.
- Blocking withdrawals from the website.
- Two-factor authentication set to “Always” for all operations.
Shield does not activate on its own: once the list is checked, you must accept the conditions and press “Activate OKX Shield”. The status then changes to Active, with your limit displayed (activation guide). If you’re new to double authentication, our 2FA guide explains the principle.
The Binance hack is not closed. The full technical report has not been published, South Korea convened its exchanges on November 2 to tighten the rules on hot wallets, and Star Xu’s call for a common alert system remains to be implemented.
Favorable scenario: the sector pools its defense and the remaining 5% is filled smoothly. Unfavorable scenario: part of the funds still in the hands of hackers is laundered, and trust in centralized platforms erodes. In both cases, the security of your account remains in your hands, and a few minutes of settings are enough to strengthen it.
Activate OKX Shield from the App Security Center: it’s over here. No account yet? OKX registration with code COINTRIBUNE. Reserved for OKX Europe (EEA) verified individual accounts; ceiling depending on account level, reimbursement subject to review.
FAQs
According to Binance, no: the exchange covered the loss with its own funds and says it has replaced 95% of the stolen assets as of November 2, the rest being made up of less liquid tokens. Withdrawals reopened on November 1st.
No. It is a free, discretionary program that can reimburse eligible losses after review. The displayed limit is a maximum, not a guaranteed amount.
That’s not his role. Shield aims to take control of your account. A hack of the platform is the responsibility of the exchange, which MiCA supervises in Europe.
