In recent months, digital giant Microsoft has invested massively in an attempt to reinvent itself through artificial intelligence (AI). The company founded by Bill Gates continues in the same vein by engaging in a collaboration with the startup Sarvam AI, based in India. The challenge is positioning on the Asian AI market.
Microsoft and Sarvam AI, conquering the Asian AI market
Microsoft Azure, the cloud computing platform offered by Microsoft, has entered into a strategic alliance with Indian startup Sarvam AI. A deal which, for Microsoft, is eminently strategic. The company aims to strengthen its presence in the Asian AI market through the latter.
The second strategic axis of this collaboration is focused on improving its AI offerings. This involves the integration of Sarvam’s Indic speech large language model (LLM) into Microsoft’s Azure AI infrastructure.
To achieve this, the company plans to rely on Azure’s OpenAI and Machine Learning services. Technical support which should promote the hosting and scaling of LLMs in a relevant manner.
According to Puneet Chandok, President, Microsoft India and South Asia, this partnership pursues a much broader objective. It aims to support India’s plans to become a “a nation at the forefront of AI”. The official expressed his dream of a future where AI solutions, driven by voice interfaces, transcend language barriers, benefiting individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Towards a local AI offer?
Sarvam’s LLM targets input into Indian languages and contextual nuances. This, promising greater accuracy and better value for money for AI applications in India.
Initially focused on Hindi, one of the most spoken languages in India with more than 609 million speakers, the LLM aims to offer a transparent voice interface. But above all natural and adapted to local preferences.
Recognizing the importance of voice interfaces in Indian languages, Microsoft considers them the ideal medium for generative AI applications. The partnership plans to facilitate the rapid and responsible adoption of generative AI by local businesses. Aligning with Microsoft’s broader strategy to integrate AI across its technology infrastructure.
Recall that Microsoft’s commitment to AI was evident in its recent financial performance characterized by a notable 18% year-over-year increase in profits. At the same time, the company’s valuation exceeded $3 trillion. This result is attributed to the integration of AI which allowed Microsoft to consolidate its position on the stock market, overtaking Apple in the process.
