Crypto: BNB Chain prepares a new blockchain for 2027
Summarize this article with:

BNB Chain is preparing a new Layer 1 blockchain for early 2027, with an ambition: to exceed 100,000 transactions per second and reduce block production to 200 milliseconds. The project, tentatively called New L1, will work alongside BNB Smart Chain without creating new crypto. Changpeng Zhao (CZ), founder of Binance, supports this approach. The first experiments are already underway, but the public network is not yet available.

Engineers assemble a golden crypto infrastructure on a futuristic construction site, under an a2027 counter.

In brief

  • BNB Chain is preparing a new blockchain capable of targeting more than 100,000 transactions per second.
  • The network will hold BNB for fees, staking and governance, without creating a new token.
  • A public testnet is planned for the end of 2026, before a launch of the mainnet planned for early 2027.

BNB Chain prepares a second network for 2027

BNB Chain no longer relies solely on improving its current network. Technical documentation updated on October 22 introduces a new first-layer blockchain, designed to work alongside BNB Smart Chain (BSC). This infrastructure must accommodate crypto applications requiring particularly fast transactions.

The project does not start from scratch. In January, BNB Chain had already accelerated its network with the Fermi upgrade. Further optimizations then reduced the block production time to 450 milliseconds.

Progress is measurable. According to the official roadmap released in July, BSC increased from around 2,800 transactions per second in January benchmarks to 5,200 TPS in June 2026. In-memory block finality also decreased from 1,125 to 650 milliseconds.

BNB Chain now wants to take a new step. Rather than focusing all applications on BSC, the ecosystem is preparing a separate network, geared more towards high-frequency crypto trading, automated payments, and financial operations requiring low latency.

This second infrastructure will, however, retain economic and technical links with BSC. Development is currently continuing on a private test network. No public explorers or RPC hotspots open to developers have been announced yet. The exact launch date also remains unknown. BNB Chain is targeting early 2027, after a public testing phase expected before the end of 2026.

More than 100,000 transactions per second targeted

The technical objectives are particularly ambitious. New L1 should make it possible to process more than 100,000 crypto transactions per second, with block production every 200 milliseconds and preconfirmations around 20 milliseconds.

For comparison, the 5,200 TPS previously measured on BSC represents approximately one-nineteenth of this new target. However, the testing conditions differ. It would therefore be premature to consider the future network as 19 times faster than BSC in real conditions.

The new architecture is based in particular on an improved version of Parlia, BNB Chain’s consensus mechanism. It provides for up to 64 validators, with BLS cryptographic signatures intended to facilitate their coordination.

Transaction processing must also evolve. On traditional crypto blockchains, operations are generally ordered and then executed in a process that can slow down block production. New L1 wants to further separate these stages.

Validators will establish the order of transactions while their execution can take place asynchronously. Another new feature: preconfirmations. An application will be able to quickly obtain a signed indication regarding the likely inclusion of its transaction. The announced delay is around 20 milliseconds.

Be careful, however: pre-confirmation does not mean finality. A preconfirmed transaction is not necessarily executed or definitively validated. Certain indications may still be revoked. This distinction matters for financial applications, particularly when a transaction involves guarantees or liquidations. Developers will therefore have to wait for the results of the first public tests to measure the reliability of these mechanisms under heavy load.

CZ supports a single crypto for both blockchains

The new network will not have its own token. This is one of the most important choices of the project. BNB will remain the native asset of BSC and New L1. It will continue to be used for fee payments, staking and governance.

On October 25, Changpeng Zhao welcomed this orientation on X with a short formula: “Multiple chains, one coins”. The idea is to develop multiple infrastructures while maintaining a single common crypto asset. This organization avoids immediately creating a second token economy, with its own emissions and distribution mechanisms.

BNB Chain also plans a native bridge between the two networks. Users will theoretically be able to move their assets from BSC to New L1 and vice versa. But this functionality remains in development.

Exactly how the transfers work, the required delays and protections against attacks will still need to be evaluated. This strategy could also change BNB’s place in the ecosystem. If New L1 attracts more applications, transactions and staking could increase the use of BNB crypto. However, this does not guarantee an increase in its value.

Everything will depend on the actual adoption of the new network and the economic activity generated. CZ has also been interested in the use of blockchain for automated operations for several months. In May, he presented AI agents as a possible engine of crypto transactions. This software could multiply micropayments and settlements between applications without permanent human intervention. New L1 seeks in particular to accommodate this type of activity.

Crypto trading, DeFi and AI among targeted uses

Speed is not the only change planned. BNB Chain also wants to change the way applications access network capacity. The documentation notably mentions a mechanism called Multi-Lane.

It should make it possible to reserve part of the available resources for certain categories of operations, in particular DeFi liquidations, oracles and transfers between blockchains. The objective is to prevent a very important activity, such as a wave of exchanges on a crypto protocol, from monopolizing all the available capacity.

These reservations will not, however, guarantee that every transaction will be automatically executed. New L1 also plans to remove the traditional public mempool. In many blockchains, crypto transactions wait in an accessible space before they are included in the blocks. Specialized players can analyze this space to identify arbitrage opportunities or prioritize their own transactions.

The new network plans to transmit more operations directly to block producers. This organization could reduce certain forms of front-running, without eliminating all risks of manipulating the order of transactions.

Applications using artificial intelligence are also among the sought-after uses. BNB Chain notably provides functions allowing you to sponsor fees, temporarily use certain keys and group several operations.

An AI agent could thus carry out different financial tasks in an environment adapted to frequent transactions. Confidentiality also plays a role in the work. Developers prepare private transfers based on cryptographic proofs. Some information may be hidden when users choose this option. BNB Chain will therefore have to transform these technical proposals into truly usable products before opening them widely to the crypto market.

The 2027 launch remains subject to several challenges

The roadmap first plans a public testnet before the end of 2026. This step will allow developers to evaluate network performance, crypto transaction costs and validator behavior.

The mainnet could then arrive in early 2027. No specific date has been announced. The first challenge concerns stability. Producing a block every 200 milliseconds requires rapid coordination between machines, even when they are located in different data centers.

Decentralization will also need to be monitored. The announced cap of 64 validators does not yet specify how many independent operators will actually participate in the network. Staking distribution and hardware requirements will be important elements to consider.

Another particular point is the costs. Documentation provides for a base commission set at zero. This does not mean that transactions will be free, since users will still have to pay priority fees. The calculation is also based on the gas limit declared for an operation, rather than on its actual consumption only.

A poor estimate of needs could therefore cost developers more. The bridge between BSC and New L1 will also have to prove itself. Attacks against bridges have already caused considerable losses in the crypto industry.

The announced performances finally remain to be demonstrated in a real situation. BNB Chain even mentioned, in its January roadmap, a long-term ambition of up to one million transactions per second. The threshold of 100,000 TPS would therefore represent an intermediate step. The ecosystem nevertheless has the means to support future projects. In October 2025, YZi Labs, the investment company founded by CZ, announced a billion-dollar fund for BNB Chain developers.
