Starknet introduces Bitcoin Stoking on Ethereum

Starknet's governance has approved SNIP-31, a proposal that will allow Bitcoin to stake on the Ethereum Layer 2 network. With 93.6 % of voters supporting the measure, the update introduces Bitcoin in the Starknet consensus process alongside its native token, Strk.

Bitcoin and Ethereum parts stacked together with a shiny light, symbolizing the integration of the blockchain and crypto stoking.

In short

  • Starknet's governance has adopted SNIP-31 with 93.6 % support, allowing Bitcoin Stuking alongside Strk in its Ethereum Layer 2 network.
  • Bitcoin tokenized wrappers like WBTC, L-BTC, TBTC, and Solvbtc will be supported, with a 25 % ceiling of consensus for the BTC.
  • This initiative reflects a broader trend of the DEFI to mobilize Bitcoin liquidity while diversifying the risk through several BTC tokenized assets.

How will Bitcoin Stuking work

The new stuking framework attributes to Bitcoin a weight of 0.25, granting it up to 25 % of the total consensus power. The remaining balance remains linked to Strk, ensuring that the network token continues to anchor security and governance. According to the team of the Ethereum Layer 2 network, the official launch of the Stoking Bitcoin will take place in the coming weeks.

At the launch, Starknet will support several Bitcoin tokenized wrappersincluding Wrapped Bitcoin, Liquid Bitcoin, TBTC, and Solvbtc. Governance rules are now in place to assess new wrappers over time, creating a flexible framework for the Bitcoin tokenized market in full evolution. Holders of these approved assets will soon be able to stake or delegate Bitcoin on Starknet to participate in the security of the network and win protocol awards.

Is part of a greater change

Starknet, a zero knowledge rollup built on Stark evidence, is oriented towards a multi-active stuking model. This initiative aligns with its broader strategy to expand its developer ecosystem and to experiment with reserve assets in its tokenomic.

The integration of bitcoin into stuking also corresponds to a broader trend in the defi: mobilize the largest asset as global crypto in the DEFI. Other protocols such as Babylon, BTCFI SUR SUP and Stacks explore ways to exploit Bitcoin, whether by performance opportunities or as safety strata for new financial systems.

By supporting several wrappers, Starknet aims to diversify the risk of childcare and technical, while the ceiling of 25 % of the consensus guarantees that Strk remains at the heart of governance and the design of the network.

What are the next steps

Once the upgrade is deployed, Starknet users holding approved BTC Wrappers can stake alongside Strk to contribute to the network consensus, strengthen security thanks to a diversification of assets, and earn rewards from the protocol. This deployment marks a new step in the evolution of Starknet and strengthens the growing effort through the DEFI to channel unusual Bitcoin liquidity towards more productive use cases.
