For years, Ethereum has faced the network's congestion problems. If the updates of recent years have made it possible to build a whole ecosystem of Layers 2 scalables, this was done at the expense of Layer 1. to meet the increasingly insistent criticism, the Ethereum and Vitalik Buterin Foundation have decided to now put all their efforts on the performance of the latter. The new Optimump2P functionality currently in Testnet will undoubtedly be an asset to increase network performance and communication between nodes.

Since 2021, the Ethereum network has regularly has network congestion problems that lead to high transaction costs or slowdown. These scalability problems made the Ethereum Killer like Avalanche and Solana who offered much more scalable blockchains and took advantage of the previous Bull Run.
Unfortunately for them, Vitalik Buterin very early planned solutions in the Roadmap of Ethereum and one of them lies in the implementation of layer solutions 2. Little by little, Arbitrum, Optimism, base settled in the web3 as highly scalable solutions to compensate for the weaknesses of Layer 1.
The new architecture of Ethereum, focused on modularity, has improved the performance of Layers 2 thanks to the improvement of the data availability layer with the implementation of Blobs.
However, the success of Layers 2 has led to a abandonment of the Layer 1, much less usable by users accustomed to rapid transactions. In addition, Layers 2 captured most of the network income.
The uncertainties on the evolution of the price of the ETH have aroused many criticisms addressed to Vitalik Buterin and the Ethereum Foundation. Vitalik has therefore decided to refocus Ethereum's Roadmap on improving the performance of Layer 1. Among, the problems to be resolved, current work focuses on the slowness of the propagation of information between nodes.
Optimump2p: the novelty that must improve communication between nodes
Often neglected in the axes of blockchains improvement, communication between nodes is often a source of congestion. Indeed, currently the Ethereum nodes communicate with each other via Gossipsub, a peer -to -peer communication protocol. Unfortunately, this protocol creates redundancy, because the nodes propagate their information in all directions and a node can therefore receive the same information several times.
The network layer is largely based on traditional “Gossip” approaches, which use a decentralized approach to propagate messages between nodes.

Optimum and MIT have therefore set up a new communication protocol, Optimump2pto correct this defect. The idea of this protocol is to send the information by package so that the nodes can rebuild it once they have received enough packages.
For the moment, this protocol is tested by several important validators of Ethereum which concentrates 14 % of the network storage. This test shows that even with a lot of information disseminated on the network, there are ten times higher performance.
After improving the different layers of Ethereum, the new Optimump2P functionality aims to update the network layer and communication between nodes. Currently in testnet, Optimump2P could give new youth to the Layer 1 Ethereum in the coming months.
