The Generosity of the Crypto Community in Action After the Turkey and Syria Earthquakes

Two powerful tremors have taken place recently in Turkey and Syria. They razed several buildings in the two regions, depriving the populations of various vital services. They also caused the disappearance of 9,400 people, with many injured. Less than 48 hours after this sad event, the crypto community reacted, expressing its support for the victims.

More than 11 million dollars of funds (in cryptos) collected and pledged!

The crypto community has often been quick to support victims of disasters of all kinds around the world. It demonstrated this once again after the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Indeed, she succeeded in mobilizing on her own 11.7 million dollars in less than 48 hours.

More than $11 million mobilized

Among the crypto companies that participated in the fundraising is Humanity Check. This Web3 company focused on digital identity has made donations to Doctors Without Borders. She went through The Giving Block, a crypto charitable giving company. At the same time, several crypto players and entities have pledged a total of $9 million to help victims.

Exchanges are among those that promised the most important funds. There is in particular Binance which intends to offer 100 dollars of BNB, or nearly 5 million dollars. The funds will be sent to its users located in the most affected areas in Turkey. Additionally, Tron founder Justin Sun pledged $1 million worth of TRX.

Turkish rock star Haluk Levent has been granted a special exemption from Turkey’s crypto ban. She then deployed 3 multisig wallets, raising over $2.7 million. The funds include $1 million from AVAX from the Avalanche Foundation. He entrusted the supervision of the collection and distribution of the funds to his charity organization Ahbap.

Many people have decided to help earthquake victims with donations of items they own. But Lucy Easthope, an international disaster recovery consultant, finds this method unnecessary. “The most important and useful thing right now is money. There are non-governmental organizations, charities and government organizations stepping up to help. What they need, not just now, but for years to come, is money“, she explained during an interview with BBC World News.
