The French investigation targeting X sparks tensions between Paris and Washington

The X affair has reached a milestone. What initially involved a French investigation into Elon Musk's platform is now taking the form of a political standoff between Paris and Washington. The text transmitted already highlights this rise in tension around X.

While the European age verification system is already fueling concerns, tensions are also rising around X. The American Department of Justice refused to help France in its investigation into the platform, deeming the procedure politically motivated. The Paris prosecutor's office, however, assured that it had no knowledge of this letter and recalled the independence of French justice, reports the Wall Street Journal.

This discrepancy is significant. It shows that the affair no longer only revolves around illegal content or the X algorithm. It also becomes a narrative clash. Washington talks about freedom of expression and protecting an American company. Paris, for its part, insists on the application of French law to a platform operating on its territory.

The symbol is strong, because Elon Musk himself relayed the article from WSJ on X with a clear message: “this needs to stop”. This simple gesture is enough to further politicize the issue. From then on, each stage of the procedure goes beyond the judicial framework and fuels a broader transatlantic conflict over the regulation of large platforms.

Why Paris is maintaining the pressure

On the French side, the file is far from light. The investigation opened in January 2025 initially focused on possible algorithm abuse and fraudulent data extraction. It then expanded to much more serious suspicions, notably around sexual deepfakes, child pornography images and content denying crimes against humanity.

French authorities also raided the Paris offices of X in February 2026. Elon Musk, former CEO Linda Yaccarino and other officials were summoned for a hearing set for April 20, 2026. The prosecution specifies that the investigation will continue, even if the targeted leaders do not appear.

In other words, Paris wants to show a simple thing: X is not out of reach. Regardless of Elon Musk's political weight or the nationality of the company, the platform remains exposed to local laws as long as it broadcasts content in France and carries out an activity there. It is a message addressed to X, but also to all of Silicon Valley.

Washington defends X, but above all its own doctrine

The American response is not limited to defending Musk. It reflects a much broader vision. In the letter cited by the WSJthe Department of Justice believes that France would seek to use its penal system to regulate a space of free expression in a manner contrary to the American First Amendment.

This line is part of an already tense climate. For several months, the Trump administration has openly criticized European rules on content, moderation and digital sovereignty. Reuters also reported that Washington is pushing its diplomats to fight certain foreign initiatives aimed at regulating the practices of American technology giants.

Clearly, X serves here as a test case. Behind the legal case, the United States defends a principle: to prevent Europe from setting, through local law, limits which could impact the expression and activity of American groups. This is why the tone is so harsh. The issue is no longer just X. It is the border between European regulation and American speech doctrine.

Basically, the X affair sums up the era well. Social networks are no longer just tech companies. They have become areas of confrontation between States, visions of law and models of society. And in this duel between Paris and Washington, X is not only the target. The platform is now the battlefield.
