Aiden Pleterski will appear before a Toronto jury without a lawyer. Nicknamed the Canadian “Crypto King”, the 27-year-old young man must be tried from October 5 in a case of fraud and laundering linked to tens of millions of dollars entrusted by investors. His trial is expected to last four weeks.

In brief
- Aiden Pleterski will represent himself in Canadian justice.
- Investors reportedly entrusted him with around 40 million Canadian dollars.
- The trial for fraud and money laundering is scheduled to begin on October 5.
Crypto “Crypto King” Arrives in Court Without a Lawyer
Pleterski had requested a postponement of the trial to allow more time to hire a lawyer. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice refused. He will therefore have to defend himself before the jury. The case comes as crypto adoption reaches record levels in Canada, with the sector now under much greater scrutiny from authorities.
Judge Shaun Nakatsuru nevertheless clarified that he would play a reinforced role during the hearings. In particular, he may intervene on certain objections in order to prevent inadmissible elements from being presented to the jury.
Trial dates had been set as early as June 2025. Pleterski reportedly recently tried to raise enough money to finance his defense. His lawyer when requesting a postponement explained that members of his family were willing to sell assets to help him. The court did not grant more time. The trial will therefore begin on October 5 and is expected to last approximately four weeks.
Nearly 40 million dollars entrusted by investors
The affair dates back mainly to 2021 and 2022. Pleterski had built an image on social networks of a young, successful trader, with luxury cars and a spectacular lifestyle. According to information resulting from the bankruptcy proceedings, investors entrusted him with approximately 40 million Canadian dollars. The criminal charges include fraud over $5,000 and laundering suspected proceeds of crime.
Prosecutors accuse him of luring clients with the promise of large profits from crypto and currency trading.
Cointelegraph estimates the amount that Pleterski would have obtained from his subscribers and investors between 2021 and 2022 at around $30 million. The bankruptcy proceedings would have only recovered around $3 million for some 160 creditors.
For several months, Canada has been strengthening its response to fraud cases linked to digital assets. In March, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada launched a coordinated operation against crypto scams. Pleterski has not yet been convicted. It is now up to the jury to decide.
The crypto affair had already taken a violent turn
The Pleterski case had long gone beyond the scope of a simple bankruptcy. In December 2022, the young Canadian was kidnapped and held for several days. Several people, some of whom were allegedly linked to investors, were subsequently accused in this case. Pleterski was allegedly assaulted and forced to record a video discussing the lost money.
Two years later, Canadian authorities indicted him. The fraud and money laundering charges were announced in May 2024 after an investigation led in particular by the Durham Regional Police and Ontario regulatory authorities.
The file also occurs in a Canada that has become stricter with the industry. In March, 23 crypto companies lost their licenses in the country amid increased financial oversight. Pleterski now risks a very special trial: four weeks of debates before a jury, without a defense lawyer at his side. For someone who introduced himself as the “Crypto King,” the scene will be significantly less glamorous.
