Telegram continues the development of its digital ecosystem with a new stage focused on crypto. Its founder, Pavel Durov, announced the deployment this summer of a native wallet without custody of funds directly integrated into the messaging application. This initiative could enable more than 1 billion monthly active users to send digital assets autonomously. The project is part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening uses linked to peer-to-peer payments and Web3 technologies within the platform.

Telegram is preparing a native crypto wallet to send cryptocurrencies directly from the application to more than a billion users.

In brief

  • Telegram plans to launch a custody-free native crypto wallet directly into its app this summer.
  • The service will allow more than a billion users to send cryptocurrencies instantly and without fees, according to Pavel Durov.
  • The wallet will accompany the name change from Toncoin to Gram, in reference to the project presented by Telegram in 2018.
  • This initiative is part of Telegram’s strategy to develop Web3 services and cryptocurrency payments within its ecosystem.

Telegram wants to integrate crypto directly into its application

Telegram’s upcoming wallet will function as a non-custodial solution. Users will thus maintain control of their funds and be able to carry out crypto transactions without an intermediary. In his message sent to his Telegram channel on Tuesday, Pavel Durov said that transfers will take place instantly and without fees, directly from the messaging application.

This summer will mark the largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in history. With the integration of a native Gram wallet into every Telegram app, over a billion users will soon be able to make instant, fee-free crypto transactions.

The executive presented this initiative as the largest deployment of a non-custodial crypto wallet ever. However, Telegram has not yet revealed a precise schedule or communicated the technical characteristics of the service. The announcement is therefore mainly based on the objectives stated by the company.

The platform asserts to have exceeded one billion monthly active users in 2025. This user base gives Telegram a potential reach far greater than that of many specialized applications. Even partial adoption could expand access to peer-to-peer payments and self-custody solutions for digital assets.

Gram revives Telegram’s ambitions

This announcement comes shortly after an important development around The Open Network. The network indicated want to rename your Toncoin token to Grama choice which marks a return to the name presented in the white paper published by Telegram in 2018. Pavel Durov describes this evolution as a return to the origins of the project.

The name change comes several years after the original blockchain project was abandoned, following a 2020 agreement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Since then, Telegram has focused its efforts on the development of the TON ecosystem and its crypto services. This new direction also accompanies the gradual integration of Web3 functionalities within the application.

The Gram portfolio is part of this development strategy. By bringing together messaging and crypto payments in the same interface, Telegram seeks to expand the uses of its digital infrastructure. The launch expected this summer will make it possible to measure the real adoption of this new functionality and its impact on the evolution of the TON ecosystem among platform users.
