Survey: Where is the blockchain in France?

La French Chain, a company that references startups Web3 tricolors, conducted a survey on the current situation of the blockchain ecosystem in France. Check out some of the highlights of his report!

Strong centralization in terms of geographical distribution

In less than 4 years, the number of companies operating in the blockchain sector in France has almost tripled. Whilein 2018, they were 88, as of August 31, 2022, there were 240 of them. It is interesting to note that 80% of them were located in the following three large ones: Île-de-France (153), Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur or PACA ( 26), Occitania (14). These territories alone accounted for 84% of professionals in the industry, with Île-de-France employing more than 3,012 professionals, while PACA and Occitanie had 135 and 65 respectively.

At the same time, the report highlighted a total absence of ecosystem players in Center Val-de-Loire, Corsica and Normandy.

Good financing performance

From one era to another, investors have injected more capital into French blockchain startups, regardless of the mode of collection used (ICO, venture capitalists and Business Angels). Indeed, France, which had received $174 million in financing between 2009 and 2018, was allocated a total of $1.5 billion between the first quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2022. This corresponds to an increase over 762%.

Additionally, between Q1 and Q2 2022, the number of startups funded in the country increased by almost 260%.

Recruitment in full swing

As part of this study, the companies surveyed admitted to preparing to recruit a cumulative total of 900 employees over the next twelve months. Developers are among the most sought-after profiles (82%), followed by salespeople (55%) and managers (21%).

Currently, the companies with the most employees in the sector are Ledger, Wakam, Sorare, Coinhouse, Nomadic Labs, Kaiko, Arianee, Dogami, Dawex and iExec. Between them, they employ nearly 40% of the experts in the field, i.e. 1,517 employees.

In addition, blockchain remains a very masculine domain, as women represent only 14% of employees in the sector.

From this report, we can get some interesting information. But if we had to remember just one, it would be that the French blockchain ecosystem is growing.
