In brief

  • Stablecard allows you to receive and spend USDPT in 37 markets.
  • Western Union is powered by Solana, Anchorage Digital Bank, Rain and Visa.
  • The service is targeting more than 60 markets before the end of 2026.

Stablecard transforms USDPT into a global payment method

Stablecard extends a strategy initiated a few months earlier when Western Union launched its USDPT stablecoin on Solana. The new service now gives a concrete use to this digital dollar. Users can directly receive a Western Union transfer into a USDPT wallet, without immediately going through cash or a bank account.

The product is based on a partnership with Rain, an infrastructure provider specializing in stablecoin-related cards. USDPT remains issued by Anchorage Digital Bank and operates on the Solana blockchain. This architecture allows Western Union to maintain a regulated layer while using a network capable of processing digital payments at scale.

Once funds are received, customers can hold their USDPT balance, send it to select compatible wallets or platforms, and then spend it with the Stablecard. This works on the Visa network. Payments can also be made through Apple Pay and Google Pay, which avoids disrupting consumer habits.

The deployment begins in 37 markets. Western Union plans to exceed 60 markets before the end of 2026. The company particularly targets recipients of international transfers and populations exposed to high inflation or instability of their local currency.

Visa connects stablecoin to traditional commerce

The interest of Stablecard lies in the connection between two very different infrastructures. Solana ensures the circulation of USDPT. Visa then allows the stablecoin to be spent at millions of merchants who do not need to accept cryptocurrencies directly.

This approach reduces one of the biggest barriers to adoption. A user can receive a stablecoin, but pay for their purchases as with a traditional card. The trader does not manage a crypto wallet, blockchain, or technical volatility. The change is mainly found in the financial engine behind the transaction.

Visa is already accelerating in this direction. The group has notably integrated Polygon and Base into its stablecoin settlement program. Stablecard adds a general public dimension to this development. Stablecoins are no longer just used for settlements between companies or platforms. They become a directly spendable digital reserve.

For Western Union, the issue also remains defensive. International transfers are under attack from fintechs, mobile wallets and blockchain solutions. By integrating these technologies into its own network, the company avoids letting stablecoins completely circumvent its model. Rather, it seeks to transform them into an extension of its services.

Competition is also advancing. MoneyGram is developing its own dollar-backed stablecoin with integration designed for transfers, custody of funds and conversion to local currencies. The sector is therefore entering a new phase. Historical players no longer just observe the blockchain. They are starting to launch their own digital rails.

However, conversions between stablecoins, local currencies, bank accounts and cash remain the most expensive steps. Efficiency therefore strongly depends on the infrastructure present in each country. Stablecard specifically reduces some of this friction by allowing USDPT to be spent directly with Visa. But it does not remove all limits. As a study questioning the systematic advantages of stablecoins shows, these tools do not automatically outperform traditional solutions on every corridor.
