Silk Road: Ross Ulbricht, $47 million in Bitcoin and donations still pouring in

The crypto community is exulting: Ross Ulbricht, founder of the infamous Silk Road, has regained freedom after 12 years of detention. This former mastermind of the anonymous marketplace on the darknet continues to polarize opinion, between fervent support of defenders of cryptocurrencies and harsh criticism of its detractors. As a sign of solidarity, Kraken, an iconic crypto exchange, offered a generous donation in Bitcoin. However, his release reignites deep debates about Ulbricht's role in the history of Bitcoin and decentralization.

Bitcoins for Ross Ulbricht: tool of freedom or double-edged sword?

Ross Ulbricht, nicknamed “Dread Pirate Roberts”, made history by launching Silk Road in 2011a free market platform using Bitcoin and Tor. Its objective: to offer a space of exchange outside state control. Result ? Anonymous transactions ranging from works of art to illicit substances.

If this libertarian vision is attractive, it has also attracted the wrath of the authorities.

Ulbricht's arrest in 2013 led to a massive seizure of 173,991 BTC by the American government, today valued at $18.4 billion. However, wallets associated with Silk Road, worth $47 million, still escape the control of the authorities.

While Ross Ulbricht has just been pardoned by Donald Trump, Kraken has decided to intervene with a donation of $111,111 in Bitcoinaddressed to the official platform FreeRoss.org, a site which campaigns for its rehabilitation.

This initiative is part of a global outpouring of support: 2.5 BTC, or approximately $261,000, were collected by 93 donors.

We want to help Ross get back on his feet after everything he's been through ” Kraken said in a widely shared tweet.

This action underlines Ulbricht's ambiguous position in the crypto universe: libertarian visionary for some, black market facilitator for others.

A divided but mobilized crypto community

The release of Ross Ulbricht, orchestrated by Donald Trump, sparked widespread debate. For its supporters, this gesture symbolizes recognition of a sentence deemed disproportionate : two life sentences, with an additional 40 years, for non-violent crimes.

For others, this liberation could encourageillicit use of cryptocurrenciestarnishing the image of bitcoin.

Ulbricht's impact, however, extends beyond the borders of crypto. Hollywood is working on a documentary that promises to explore his deeper motivations and implications for the future of digital currencies. His vision of a free market, free of government influence, still resonates in libertarian circles. But at what cost?

Trump's initiatives towards the crypto sector, as recent tweets suggest, could go further. Some are considering a strategic reserve of Bitcoin, marking an unprecedented institutional adoption.

However, the controversy remains lively: is Ulbricht a martyr of decentralization or a pioneer who has crossed the red line?

But why did Donald Trump want to save Ross Ulbricht? On the one hand, the latter embodies the democratization of Bitcoin and resistance to centralized authority. On the other hand, the former president used this pardon to distance himself from past judicial excesses, thus affirming his vision of a crypto-friendly future.
