Crypto: Should we fear for the life of Sam Bankman-Fried?

The American authorities accuse SBF of having notably misappropriated the funds, estimated at billions of dollars, FTX customers. The former exchange CEO is also accused of misleading FTX and Alameda Research investors, his hedge fund. The latter’s CEO happens to be Caroline Ellison., SBF’s ex-girlfriend. For many, Sam Bankman-Fried could not have committed his alleged wrongdoings without collaborating with the CEO of Alameda Research.

What was Caroline Ellison’s role in the collapse of FTX?

After the collapse of FTX, SBF found itself facing various serious charges. Even so, he remained free for quite a while, making controversial appearances in the media. But, on December 12, 2022, the Bahamian authorities arrested him and his bail was rejected the next day. Sam Bankman-Fried was then remanded to the Bahamas.

At the same time, the American authorities indicted the ousted leader in Manhattan federal court, among other things, for fraud and money laundering. Now they want to bring SBF to the United States to appear in court. In this context, Fox Business revealed, in a tweet this December 18, that Caroline Ellison would cooperate with the authorities.

SBF’s ex-girlfriend would find herself in the government’s crosshairs over FTX’s bankruptcy. That’s what former U.S. Attorney Marc Litt told Fox & Friends Weekend. This suggests that Caroline Ellison provided information to federal authorities about FTX’s bankruptcy.

It would have happened after the arrest of Sat Bankman Fried in the Bahamas. “She was the CEO of a company that appears to be intimately involved in the alleged fraud, and she is in the sights of the government. She has a choice to make“said Marc Litt.

The former United States Attorney added:It’s in her interest to spin her narrative and tell her story before everyone else the government talks to points their finger at her, so she has every interest in cooperating and getting the benefits of cooperation“.

Bankman-Fried had refused to be extradited to the United States. Litt believes he may ultimately choose to surrender to US authorities when he appears in court in the Bahamas on Monday. “If it is almost inevitable that he will be extradited and if the delay is not his friend, which seems to me to be the case here, he could decide to give up voluntarily and come to the United States“, explained the former prosecutor.
