Premier League: Chelsea becomes the new global showcase of USDC
Summarize this article with:

Circle brings USDC to the front of Chelsea jerseys from the 2026/27 season. The main partnership, announced on August 28, outfits the men’s, women’s and academy teams, with an official debut on Sunday against Brighton at Stamford Bridge. No stablecoin issuer has ever occupied this location in the history of the English championship.

Chelsea becomes a global showcase, while a player propels a ball transformed into a luminous USDC symbol under the stadium floodlights.

In brief

  • Circle becomes main partner of Chelsea and official front-of-shirt sponsor for the 2026/27 season, including men, women and academy.
  • The USDC logo makes its debut on Sunday August 30 against Brighton, in Chelsea’s first Premier League home match.
  • Chelsea have been without a main sponsor since the end of the contract with telecoms operator Three at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Chelsea entrusts the front of its jersey to USDC

The London club formalized on Friday August 28 a main partnership with Circle which will install the Circle and USDC logos on the front of the jerseys of the men’s, women’s and academy teams from the 2026/27 season.

The revelation on the pitch will come on Sunday, during the Blues’ first home match against Brighton, in the 40,000-seat Stamford Bridge. Sports is already the focus of crypto’s attention: an analysis published in June explored whether the 2026 World Cup would become the biggest crypto event in history.

Until now, crypto players have remained confined to the rounds of the English championship. OKX teams Manchester City in this place, Kraken Tottenham. Circle becomes, according to press reviews, the first crypto financial services company to land the main location of a Premier League jersey.

Its co-founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire links this choice to the vocation of the product:

We built USDC on the belief that money should work seamlessly for everyone, everywhere, just like the internet does. This partnership with Chelsea connects us to a global sports community built on this same borderless vision. »

The issue goes beyond the logo. Circle exposes a regulated payment product to an audience mostly foreign to crypto, while the club promotes a partner it describes as a builder. Its commercial director Kash Razzaghi projects the opposite reading: the jersey makes USDC a familiar brand well beyond industry players.

After three years of temporary solutions, USDC installs its flag

Chelsea have been dragging this void since 2023. The contract with telecoms operator Three, valued at around £40 million per year according to SportsPro, ended at the end of the 2022/23 season, and four season starts followed without a main partner on the front of the shirt. A precedent had cooled the market: the FTX debacle had shattered sponsorship contracts from the previous cycle.

The facade has lived a lot. Sports data company Infinite Athlete took the shirt for the second half of the 2023/24 season in a deal priced at £40m by ESPN, property developer DAMAC appeared late in the 2024/25 season, and industrial AI software IFS was in the spotlight from February to the end of last financial year.

The wait had a price: SportsPro reports a demand of around 50 million pounds per season, other sources put it up to 65 million, and the parties have confirmed nothing. The club limits itself to asserting, via the BBC, an income in line with the expected market price. SportsPro specifies that the agreement runs for one year, with an option to extend.

Chelsea chairman Jason Gannon takes charge:

This partnership with Circle positions Chelsea at the forefront of football’s digital evolution. We are two organizations obsessed with the future, constantly innovating to be best positioned for the long term.

The removal of betting sites from the front of jerseys has given way to financial players, now the most visible category in the championship. A sponsor listed on the NYSE, subject to quarterly accounts, reduces reputational risk without abolishing it.

The battle of stablecoins comes to football

Circle reported $73.3 billion in USDC in circulation at the end of the second quarter, up 19% year-over-year, according to its quarterly results. CRCL stock closed at $94.24 before the announcement.

The infrastructure follows the same path. The company is developing a global payments network dedicated to the transfer of funds, and is preparing the public launch of Arc, its blockchain oriented towards financial uses, expected on September 16 with BlackRock, Visa and Mastercard among the founding validators. According to the Bitcoin.com articleCircle has also extended its historic partnership with Coinbase under existing conditions, which preserves its primary distribution channel.

The ambition of the issuers goes even further. Indeed, Tether, issuer of rival USDT, made a firm cash offer at the end of 2025 for Exor’s shares in Juventus, refused in one day. Industry estimates put crypto sponsorship spending in sports at around $565 million for the 2024/25 season, up around 20% year-on-year. The British framework facilitates the operation: Circle has held an e-money license from the Financial Conduct Authority since 2016. This market reading does not constitute financial advice.

It remains to measure the real effect. Sunday’s images will serve as a first test of visibility, and the exercise or not of the extension option will decide commercial confidence. The movement is part of a broader shift: stablecoins are establishing themselves in daily card payments, and football now offers them their most exposed scene. The rest will be read in the USDC circulation curve.
