On January 29, 2024, Google created a surprise by unveiling Lumiere, its new AI specializing in the generation of ultra-realistic videos. Based on a model called STUNet, this AI opens up fascinating perspectives, but also poses crucial questions about the uses that can be made of it.
LUMIERE, a revolutionary video AI
With Lumiere, Google is taking a spectacular technological leap in AI video generation. While its competitors like Meta or Anthropic are still limited to short, average quality sequences, Lumiere creates 5-second videos in full HD with striking realism.
The STUNet model on which Lumiere is based is capable of understanding the position of elements in a scene. But also the way they evolve in time and space. It first generates a still image and then adds movement to it consistently and continuously. Result: fluid and realistic videos showing, for example, moving animals.
Although we can still detect certain digital artifacts upon careful examination, the visual rendering is astonishing at first glance. Lumiere opens the way to exciting applications in cinema, special effects, animation or advertising.
Revolutionary prospects from Google, but also risks
With such technology, Google has creative power almost unlimited. The firm will be able to generate ultra-realistic videos on any subject on demand. Fascinating creative potential, but also distressing.
Because Lumiere could just as easily be used to create false political videos or spread disinformation. Google also recognizes this, explaining that this AI carries “risks of misuse”.
It’s easy to imagine the damage that a 3000-second “deepfake video” could do to public opinion or a person’s reputation. Even though Lumiere is currently only available internally at Google, its mere existence raises major ethical questions.
With Lumiere, Google is pushing the boundaries of what AI can accomplish in video generation. The videos created immerse us in a science fiction world, where any animated image can now be generated on demand. But as with any powerful technology, ethical safeguards must imperatively govern its use. Lumiere can be a creative revolution, provided that excesses are avoided. The issue is there.
