Ethereum is struggling to convince despite the Pectra update, according to JPMorgan

The recent technical improvements in Ethereum are struggling to convince JPMorgan analysts. Despite promising innovations and a renewed institutional interest, onchain activity remains desperately low. Should investors worry about this stagnation?

In short

  • JPMorgan notes that Ethereum upgrades, notably Pectra, did not stimulate network activity significantly.
  • The rise in the price of Ethereum results mainly from increasing institutional interest rather than increased user adoption.
  • Daily transactions and active addresses remain stable despite technical improvements.
  • Ethereum is more and more positioned as an institutions oriented blockchain, like Bitcoin.

Technical improvements that are struggling to convince users

The JPMorgan analyst team, led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, delivers a mixed observation on the recent developments in Ethereum. Pectra upgrade, deployed this month, was to revolutionize the ecosystem thanks to several major improvement proposals.

The latter notably aimed to optimize the efficiency of stuking, increase rewards and speed up the deposits and withdrawal processes.

Yet, the figures talk about themselves. Daily transactions do not display any significant progression. Active addresses also stagnate, revealing a user engagement that remains at neutral.

Even the total locked value (TVL), although increasing in ETH, is timidly progressing when expressed in dollars.

This situation contrasts with the expectations of the Crypto market. Developers and investors were tabling on a revival of substantial activity following these technical improvements. It is clear that technological innovation is no longer enough to boost adoption.

Analysts highlight a worrying paradox: while Ethereum fees decrease thanks to the development of Layer 2 solutions, the ETH offer in circulation has increased since Dencun upgrade. This combination could create a problematic inflationary environment in a context of low transactional activity.

An institutional strategy that distances Ethereum from individuals

JPMorgan identifies a fundamental transformation in the positioning of Ethereum. The blockchain is resolutely oriented towards the institutional market, adopting standards like ERC-3643 and ERC-1400.

These specialized technical standards facilitate regulatory compliance for token securities, incorporating KYC and anti-default functionalities essential for institutions.

This strategic reorientation recalls the evolution of Bitcoin, where institutional commitment has considerably strengthened the attraction of crypto.

Moreover, JPMorgan recently opened its doors to Bitcoin for its customers, even if Jamie Dimon maintains his personal skepticism. The bank also made its first crypto transaction on public blockchain, marking a historic stage in institutional adoption.

JPMorgan's institutional flow indicator confirms this trend. Based on the open interest of CME ETH term contracts, it reveals a strong increase in long institutional positions.

However, ETHEREUM ETHEREUM in cash record limited inputs compared to Bitcoin ETF, suggesting reduced participation of private investors.

This differentiation could explain why Ethereum is distinguished from competing platforms focused on individual engagement. While Solana or other blockchains thrive thanks to the same and the Retail activity, Ethereum relies on its compatibility with traditional financial infrastructures.

In short, JPMorgan's conclusions draw a contrasting portrait of Ethereum. If the blockchain succeeds in its moult to a credible institutional asset, it struggles to convince its historic user user base. This situation raises questions about Ethereum's ability to maintain its dominant position in the face of ever more aggressive competition. The challenge will be to reconcile technical innovation and massive adoption in a crypto market in perpetual evolution.
