The Ethereum network is about to take a new step. More than 52 % of validators have indeed expressed their support for an increase in the Gas limit. A first since The Merge in 2022! This change could directly impact transaction costs, a key issue for blockchain users and developers.

Gas limit of Ethereum: an expected increase, but risky
Fixed around 30 million, the Current Gas limit of Ethereum could climb to 36 million. According to some proposals, it could even reach 40 million in the long term. This evolution aims at:
- increase the capacity of the Ethereum network;
- facilitate crypto transactions;
- potentially reduce transaction costs.
According to Vitalik Buterin, this modification would be the first to be coordinated thanks to the POS system, more decentralized than the former consensus by evidence of work. A vote similar will also be organized for the Fork Pectra, expected in March.
However, some experts alert the dangers of too fast an increase. Toni Wahrstätter, researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, fears for example that a 60 million ceiling will compromise the stability of the network. This would cause propagation failures and put in difficulty operators of individual knots.
Vitalik Buterin and the Fork Pectra: a controlled strategy?
Faced with risks, Vitalik Buterin advocates a progressive and controlled increase. This would allowAdapt the Ethereum blockchain without resorting to a hard fork. This approach would facilitate the evolution of Ethereum according to technological advances. But not only! It would also avoid frequent blockages linked to major updates.
Influential figures in the sector support this vision. This is in particular the case of Eric Connor and Mariano Conti, including the Pump The Gas platform for A 40 million ceiling. They believe that this would reduce transaction costs without compromising decentralization.
The increase in the Gas limit of Ethereum therefore marks a major turning point for the blockchain. If this development is confirmed, it could improve the scalability of the Ethereum network. However, caution remains to avoid any destabilization of the system.
