Mira Murati, director of the artificial intelligence company OpenAI, had her Twitter account hacked. His account was used to promote a fake crypto airdrop, exposing his many followers to a potential scam.
A potential crypto phishing attack
The account of the director of the artificial intelligence company, OpenAi, was apparently hacked on the weekend, to promote a fraudulent Airdrop.
The tweet posted from Mira Murati’s official account encouraged followers to connect their wallets in order to receive free OpenAI, a scam crypto, touted as a product of OpenAI.
The website stated in the misleading tweet has been designed to closely resemble the official website of AI ChainGPT. The main difference between the original site and the copy is the addition of a prompt for users to connect their cryptocurrency wallets to the platform.
Due to its status and especially the popularity of conversational AI ChatGPT, the director of OpenAI has more than 126,000 followers on her Twitter account. Therefore, even though it was only on the social network for an hour before being deleted, the post was shared very quickly, was seen by more than 79,000 people and retweeted 83 times.
Hackers took care to restrict access to comments after the tweet was posted. In fact, users who quickly spotted the deception failed to warn others.
So far, Mira Murati has not yet spoken on the subject. No information has therefore been provided on the conditions in which the incident occurred as well as on the possible losses or victims.
Increasingly frequent attacks
In recent weeks, many accounts have been hacked. The Twitter account of the KuCoin exchange is one of them. Several misleading publications were broadcast from this account and many subscribers, duped by these false messages, saw their cryptos hijacked.
The incident comes just months after the social platform announced changes to its two-factor authentication policies. Now, SMS text messaging as an account security option is no longer offered to regular users. Only those who have subscribed to the Twitter Blue premium subscription service are entitled to it. For some twittos, the wave of hacking of Twitter accounts that the crypto ecosystem is experiencing is due to this Twitter update.
Either way, these incidents underscore the need for increased caution, particularly when it comes to crypto airdrops, which can be used for fraudulent purposes and remind us of the importance of always verifying the authenticity of information before to act. Indeed, vigilance must remain our best ally to navigate serenely within the crypto ecosystem.
