Crypto: Vitalik Buterin bets on zk‑EVM to validate blocks by 2027
Summarize this article with:

Ethereum is about to enter a new era. In a message published on X, Vitalik Buterin announces a major technical upheaval: zk-EVMs could become, by 2027, the main block validation mechanism. An in-depth transformation of the protocol, which would mark one of the most ambitious turning points since the creation of the network. Performance, decentralization, scalability… Buterin affirms that the trilemma is “resolved” in practice. Only one challenge remains: guaranteeing security.

In brief

  • Vitalik Buterin announces that zk-EVMs will become the main mode of validation on Ethereum between 2027 and 2030.
  • The blockchain trilemma (scalability, decentralization, security) would, according to him, be resolved in practice thanks to solutions already in operation.
  • Data availability sampling is already active on the mainnet, and zk-EVMs have reached a “production-ready” performance level.
  • Partial adoption of zk-EVMs is planned for this year on certain portions of the network, in the transition phase.

Vitalik Buterin announces the rise of zk-EVM

In a post dated January 3, 2026, Vitalik Buterin claimed that zk-EVMs will likely become the primary mode of block validation on Ethereum by 2027–2030, after Fusaka is activated on December 3, 2025.

“zkEVMs are becoming the primary means of validating blocks on the network”he declared. He adds that the blockchain trilemma is now resolved “not on paper, but with code in real operation”that is to say in practice, via components already active or in the production phase.

In his eyes, the main remaining obstacle is that of security, with technical performance already there. This announcement marks a strategic turning point in Ethereum's roadmap, suggesting a gradual shift towards a new zero-knowledge proof-based validation architecture.

To support his remarks, Buterin highlights several concrete elements who support this gradual transition:

  • THE “data sampling availability” is already active on the Ethereum mainnet, marking the first half of the architecture necessary for this switchover;
  • zk-EVMs have achieved production-level performance, making them technically viable for scale adoption, although security remains to be tested;
  • The first network-wide applications are expected this year, with partial use of zk-EVM nodes on portions of the protocol;
  • The period 2027–2030 is identified as the changeover period, when zk-EVMs are expected to become the primary block validation mechanism.

Buterin also draws a historical comparison with BitTorrent and Bitcoin from 2009 to illustrate the evolution of the decentralized consensus model, with the ambition of achieving a balance between high speed, consensus and decentralization, three qualities rarely combined until now.

In his eyes, Ethereum is now in a position to combine them through the progressive integration of zk-EVM and sampling techniques, thus paving the way for a more efficient and resilient validation architecture.

A gradual ramp-up starting this year

In addition to the announcement on zk-EVMs, Vitalik Buterin also detailed the intermediate steps planned to initiate this transformation, without immediately depending on zero-knowledge proofs.

Starting this year, Ethereum plans to considerably increase the gas limit, thanks to two complementary developments: Blob-anchored logs (BAL) and enshrined proposition-builder separation (ePBS). These mechanisms will support the scaling up of the network ahead of the widespread adoption of zk-EVMs. Vitalik also indicates that zk-EVM nodes could already be operational on certain portions of the network this same year.

At the same time, it highlights another strategic component: distributed block building. According to him, the long-term objective is that “a complete block is never built in one place”in other words that the construction of a block is no longer centralized.

He specifies that this reform is not “not urgent, but worth building”. It could go through channels integrated into the protocol such as FOCIL or through decentralized validator markets, in order to limit the risks of centralized interference in the selection of transactions. Thus, Vitalik also mentions an improvement in geographic equity, an issue rarely discussed in technical debates.

Ethereum hits a new milestone with more than 2.2 million transfers, a sign of booming activity. The integration of zk‑EVMs into block validation could accelerate this dynamic, laying the foundations for a faster, more efficient and resolutely future-oriented network.
