Crypto: Grayscale launches first US-listed Zcash ETF
Summarize this article with:

Grayscale takes a new step with Zcash. The asset manager began trading its ZCSH product on the NYSE Arca on Tuesday (August 25), giving US investors exposure to ZEC directly from their brokerage account, without having to purchase or hold the token themselves. The launch, however, comes after fixing a critical flaw in Zcash’s confidential transactions. The issue has since been fixed, including with the Ironwood upgrade enabled in July.

Zcash crosses the gates of Wall Street, symbolizing the historic launch of the first American ETF and the official entry into traditional finance.

In brief

  • The ZCSH fund began trading on Tuesday August 25 on NYSE Arca, a world first for direct exposure to ZEC.
  • The vehicle, launched as a private trust in October 2017, was converted to an ETF after filing with the SEC last November.
  • The listing comes after a critical flaw in Zcash’s protected transactions was discovered and fixed.

ZCSH, nine years after the trust, enters the stock market

It took almost nine years for Grayscale’s product to take the plunge. Launched in October 2017 as a private trust, the Grayscale Zcash Trust is now listed on the US market under the ticker ZCSH. Grayscale initiated the transformation into an ETF with a filing with the SEC last November.

The difference is especially practical for investors. ZCSH holders do not directly own ZECs: they hold shares in a fund whose value must follow that of the ZECs held by the vehicle. They can thus obtain exposure to Zcash from their brokerage account, without managing the keys or the storage of the cryptocurrencies themselves.

According to Grayscale, ZCSH constitutes the first exchange-traded product offering spot exposure to Zcash. The company particularly targets investors who want to broaden their exposure to cryptos beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The Zcash flaw had cast a shadow over the launch

THE launch schedule is especially notable as Zcash went through a major security scare this year.

In May, security researcher Taylor Hornby identified a four-year-old vulnerability in the Orchard protected pool. His discovery, made with the help of Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8, revealed that an attacker could potentially have created counterfeit ZECs. An emergency patch was deployed on June 1.

The problem didn’t stop with just deploying a patch, however. Zcash’s privacy mechanisms could not cryptographically determine whether the flaw had been exploited before its discovery.

It is in this context that the Ironwood upgrade, activated in July, took on particular importance. The new system replaced Orchard and introduced accounting rules preventing more ZEC from leaving the old pool than entered it. Any counterfeit tokens thus remain blocked in the pool concerned.

Grayscale is banking on the return of confidentiality

For Grayscale, Zcash should not be seen as just another new asset to add to a list of crypto ETFs. Steve Vanourny, head of the manager’s indices, instead presents ZCSH as a complementary exposure to bitcoin, but more risky.

The bet is based on several characteristics of Zcash: a maximum supply of 21 million coins, a proof of work mechanism and, above all, the possibility of carrying out transactions with more confidentiality than on bitcoin.

Grayscale believes these properties could be of interest to investors looking for new themes in the digital asset sector. Vanourny specifies, however, that the company will mainly monitor the adoption, usefulness and security of the network, rather than just the price of ZEC. Ironwood deployment, exchange platform support and regulatory developments around privacy-focused cryptocurrencies will be among the indicators monitored.

The launch of ZCSH therefore does not guarantee the immediate arrival of significant capital. For Grayscale, the real test begins now: we will have to see if American investors are really interested in exposure to Zcash and if the network manages to transform the security episode of 2026 into a simple accident.
