Plutus takes it to a more advanced level

Cardano strengthens Plutus with five performance and cryptography-oriented CIPs. These additions come as smart contracts on the Cardano blockchain take a central place in the evolution of the network. They concern CIP-109, CIP-132, CIP-133, CIP-138 and CIP-153, they do not just change a few parameters. They expand what developers can do directly on-chain.

The Cardano Preview testnet switched to version 11 of the protocol on May 8, 2026. This activation makes the new primitives available for Plutus development testing. It is therefore a real validation phase, not a simple technical announcement.

These primitives affect several sensitive areas. There's modular exponentiation for advanced cryptography, more efficient list manipulation, multi-scalar multiplication on BLS12-381, native arrays, and optimized operations on multi-asset values.

A less spectacular, but more useful hard fork

The van Rossem hard fork is not intended to change the identity of Cardano. This is an intra-era hard fork. In other words, the network remains in the same era, without profoundly changing the form of transactions. The idea is more sober: improve Plutus, registry consistency and node security.

This sobriety is important. Cardano often advances in successive layers. Here, the network is not looking for the announcement effect. It seeks to reduce friction for applications, scripts and infrastructure already in place.

The direct consequence concerns developers. All integrated functions must be accessible on Plutus V1, V2 and V3. This reduces the gaps between versions. This also allows old scripts to benefit from more modern capabilities, without breaking everything existing.

More efficient smart contracts

The real issue is execution cost. On a blockchain, every unnecessary operation becomes an expense. If Plutus handles some native operations better, scripts can become shorter, cleaner and less cumbersome.

For example, CIP-138 provides a native Array type. CIP-153 improves multi-asset operations, a focal point for tokens built on Cardano. CIP-133 opens the door to advanced cryptographic operations, particularly around zero-knowledge proofs.

This detail may seem reserved for engineers. Yet it touches the final experience. More efficient scripting can help DApps, DeFi protocols, identity tools or multi-asset systems operate with fewer constraints.

Cardano especially prepares its infrastructure

The update isn't just about Plutus. Node v11.0.1 is now fully available and ready for the mainnet hard fork. DB-Sync 13.7.0.5 has also been promoted as a version compatible with this new node.

This is an important signal for operators. Exchanges, pools, indexers and infrastructure providers must align. In a network like Cardano, the success of a hard fork depends less on media noise than on silent coordination between technical players.

Cardano therefore plays a very classic, but solid, card: improve the base before promising an explosion of uses. Plutus gains power. The network gains coherence. It now remains to be seen whether these primitives will truly strengthen Cardano's crypto ecosystem and give developers new tools visible to users.
