Bitcoin registrations and breach of US security
Bitcoin’s Ordinals inscriptions have caused a lot of ink to flow lately. Not only do they divide the Bitcoin community, but they also constitute a bug that Luke Dashjr has promised to fix in 2024.
Lately, this has evolved. In fact, the developer of Bitcoin Core gave this flaw a name in Bitcoin Knots: CVE-2023-50428. CVE being the acronym for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures.
Alongside this story is this NVD classification of bitcoin registrations as a cybersecurity risk. On December 9, the National Vulnerability Database presented it and highlighted its impact on Casey Rodarmor’s Ordinals protocolreports Crypto Potato.
As a reminder, the NVD is an body under the aegis of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a branch of the US Department of Commerce. The NVD plays a very important role in cataloging and disseminating information regarding cybersecurity vulnerabilities to the public.
The document it published regarding BTC listings contains details regarding the origin of the vulnerability. In fact, it would come from a possibility of circumventing the data carrier limit in specific versions of Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Knots. It is therefore possible to insert data in the form of code. The severity rating is close to “5.3 Medium”.
This has always been the case since 2022.
For Luke Dashjr, he denied any form of involvement in these BTC registrations. Although he received criticism from all sides for this reason of classification by the NVD, the Bitcoin developer confirmed to Cointelegraph that he had played no role in it.
