The day of May 1, 2024 will be remembered as one of the most tumultuous for the crypto sector. It was in fact on that day that Bitcoin ETFs suffered massive and historic outflows of $563.7 million. However, in this turmoil, a ray of hope pierced the clouds with the decision of BNP Paribas, the second largest European bank, to take the step of adopting Bitcoin.
The very symbolic entry of BNP Paribas
The ax fell on spot Bitcoin ETFs this May 1, a day now described as “dark” for these instruments. A staggering $563.7 million left these funds in just 24 hours, setting an all-time record for daily outflows since their launch.
It is in this turbulent context that BNP Paribas, the second largest European bank with more than $600 billion in assets under management, officially joined the Bitcoin adoption movement. According to recent 13F filings, the institution acquired an approximately $40,000 stake in BlackRock's IBIT.
Although modest, this investment has major symbolic importance. It marks the entry of a major player in traditional European finance onto the cryptocurrency scene, an unprecedented validation of their legitimacy.
Institutional validation of Bitcoin in progress
The adoption of Bitcoin by BNP Paribas represents a further step forward in the validation by institutions of the status of bitcoin as a viable asset class. Until now, mainly American asset managers, family offices and regional banks have joined the movement.
If other major banks and asset managers in turn unveil Bitcoin allocations in the coming 13F filings, the institutional acceptance of Bitcoin will reach a new level. A dynamic which could in turn stimulate the appetite of the general public and massive inflows into ETFs and other regulated vehicles.
Despite the shock of record outflows that shook Bitcoin ETFs on May 1, BNP Paribas' symbolic investment in this type of fund represents a new milestone in the institutional adoption of the queen cryptocurrency. As other heavyweights in the traditional financial sector follow the European bank's lead, the legitimacy and appeal of Bitcoin as an asset class will continue to grow.
