Australia: Cash on the verge of extinction, Bitcoin to the rescue!

Facing a rapid transition to a cashless economy, Australia finds itself at a crossroads. The digital age is taking hold, pushing the country towards a potentially cashless society by 2025. In this changing landscape, Bitcoin is emerging as a solid alternative.

Towards a cashless Australia

Australia is moving at warp speed towards a cashless society. Major banking institutions including Macquarie Bank are considering ending cash transactions in the near future, a move already adopted by other notable banks such as Commonwealth Bank, NAB and ANZ.

However, this digital shift is not without consequences. Many citizens have already felt the effects of this transition. From limitations imposed on money withdrawals to accounts blocked following cash deposits, the journey is strewn with pitfalls. The case of a poker player whose account was frozen after a cash deposit is a clear illustration of this.

THE numbers are not lying about the decline of cash: the use of ATMs has plunged from 78 million withdrawals in 2008 to only 30 million in 2022. Today, electronic transactions predominate and the check seems relegated to oblivion.

However, while digitalization has benefits such as reduced crime, it comes with concerns over privacy and increased surveillance.

The appeal of Bitcoin in Australia

Faced with the reduction of cash, Australia presents a dichotomy. On the one hand, a significant portion of the elderly population may have difficulty adapting to this new cashless reality.

Faced with the erosion of cash, Australia displays a generational dichotomy. While the older generation may feel disoriented without access to physical money, Australia’s youth appear ready to embrace the digital age.

ASX research reveals almost 31% of young Australian investors have invested in cryptocurrencies. Better yet, Australia stands out on the global map, placing itself among the leaders when it comes to Bitcoin ATMs.

At the same time, the Australian government, always at the forefront of innovation, plans to launch its central bank digital currency (MNBC). Pilot projects are already underway.

As the use of cash declines, Bitcoin is establishing itself as a major pillar of this transition. In this context, Australia already seems to be ahead of the curve when it comes to crypto adoption.
