Billionaire Elon Musk is once again speaking out for an action involving AI. The latter is judicial, the owner of X having launched proceedings against Sam Altman, the founder of ChatGPT. In question, the latter’s non-compliance with certain standards surrounding the development of this technology.
OpenAI violates AI development standards
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, Tesla and many other companies, is embroiled in a legal dispute with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. He took them to court, claiming a violation of their non-profit agreement.
In a complaint filed recently in California Superior Court, Musk argues that OpenAI’s collaboration with Microsoft deviates from a fundamental commitment. That of advancing open source artificial general intelligence (AGI).
The legal action is based on allegations of breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and unfair trade practices. Musk therefore requested an injunction to prevent the commercial exploitation of AGI technology.
Basically, at the heart of Musk’s grievances is the ChatGPT-4 conversational tool launched in March 2023. The latter would deviate considerably from the initial principles of OpenAI. Although touted as a breakthrough in AI, GPT-4 is, he says, a closed model, which is a departure from previous iterations.
Criticism of OpenAI’s commercial transition
It must be said that OpenAI was initially founded as a non-profit AI research laboratory. However, the company transformed itself into a commercial entity via the creation of its commercial branch in 2020.
Critics, including Musk, lament the transition. According to them, the company now gives priority to the speed of development and profit rather than societal benefit in accordance with its altruistic and humanist commitments.
These accusations are somewhat supported by the numbers. Indeed, according to some sources, OpenAI’s revenues have climbed to more than $2 billion per year. This, thanks to the success of its flagship AI product, ChatGPT which places the company among the fastest growing technology firms in the world.
It should be remembered that this complaint from the boss of SpaceX comes after the latter has openly expressed his fears about AI. The latter would, according to him, threaten human existence. That’s why he advocates for rigorous government oversight and responsible research practices regarding AI development.
