Far from conventional debates on cryptos, the Swiss canton of Bern is taking a bold initiative by commissioning a study on bitcoin mining and its energy impact. In a context where environmental concerns dominate discussions on blockchain, this approach triggers as much hope as skepticism.
A decisive vote at the heart of the energy debate
The parliament of the canton of Bern voted, by a majority of 85 to 46, in favor of a study on the feasibility of bitcoin mining in the region. This motion, carried by the Bitcoin parliamentary group, aims to explore how this activity could fit into local energy strategies. Defenders of the project, inspired by initiatives such as those observed in Texas, believe that mining could consume energy surpluses, but also contribute to the stabilization of the electricity grid.
Samuel Kullmann, member of the cantonal parliament, declared that “despite criticism and classic arguments of fear, uncertainty and doubt, this decision reflects a change in perception towards bitcoin”. This initiative, however, faces opposition from the Government Council of Bern, which considers energy to be an international and not a local issue. He adds that the growing needs of data centers and technological developments make this study superfluous. Despite this, supporters see it as an opportunity to position the canton as a pioneer in the integration of blockchain and energy technologies.
Between skepticism and vision of the future
The Berne Government Council expressed major reservations about the relevance of this initiative. According to him, the price fluctuations of bitcoin and its status as a currency not recognized by the Swiss National Bank complicate any strategic integration. In addition, the canton being a net exporter of energy, this proposal could redefine local priorities, at the risk of increasing tensions on available resources.
However, this initiative could also place Bern in a unique position within the global crypto landscape. Like Lugano or Zug, famous for their crypto-friendly ecosystems, Bern could attract investments, create jobs and strengthen its position in the digital economy. The region could also become a model for other entities seeking to combine technological innovation and energy sustainability.
Thanks to the integration of energy and economic perspectives, this initiative calls more for the future. Whether or not Bern decides to adopt this technology on a large scale, its study reflects a growing dynamic: that of a world which seeks to reconcile innovation linked to blockchain with urgent societal and ecological issues.
