An estimated $6.3 billion hack puts Binance facing a major recovery operation. The platform is now seeking to find some of the stolen assets, with the support of law enforcement and partners in the sector. In this matter, the announced freeze of 3 billion dollars constitutes a first issue. The company also claims to have mobilized its own resources to cover losses linked to this security breach. The case now also involves the American authorities.

In brief
- Binance is working with the FBI and law enforcement to recover funds from the $6.3 billion hack.
- The platform’s partners have already frozen $3 billion in stolen assets.
- Binance has set aside more than $6.34 billion to cover losses, including $5 billion in tokens identical to those stolen.
- The platform holds $134 billion in reserves, but recorded $6 billion in outflows in 24 hours.
Binance cooperates with FBI to recover frozen funds
In a post on X on Friday, Binance confirmed its cooperation with law enforcement to recover some of the stolen funds. The platform did not name the agencies involved. A source close to the matter indicated that the FBI was participating in the research. The agency did not respond to questions from Cointelegraph.
Its partners have already frozen $3 billion from the hack. Binance is working with authorities to recover these assets. This blocking constitutes a first step, but does not guarantee their restitution. The procedure must still allow their transfer.
To cover losses, Binance says it has set aside more than $6.34 billion. This sum exceeds the announced amount of the piracy. It includes $5 billion held in the form of tokens identical to those stolen. These reserves must compensate for the deficit.
Significant reserves despite cash outflows
The operation comes as Binance holds $134 billion in assets. The platform occupies first place for reserves. However, it saw 6 billion dollars in outflows in 24 hours. DefiLlama reports this movement.
The cooperation with the FBI is reminiscent of a previous seizure linked to the sector. In February 2022, the US Department of Justice had announcement the recovery of 94,000 bitcoins. These assets were then worth $3.6 billion. For Binance, they were linked to the Bitfinex hack in 2016.
At the time, law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, contributed to the seizure. This precedent illustrates the role of the authorities in investigating cryptocurrency thefts. For the company, the objective now is to recover the frozen funds. No timetable has been communicated.
The rest of the case will therefore depend on the steps taken to recover the frozen $3 billion. Binance will also have to monitor the movements of its reserves and the evolution of fund outflows. At this point, no recovery timetable has been announced.
