Anthropic wants to allocate 5% of its shares to a new fund intended to finance projects of general interest, subject to the agreement of its shareholders. Elon Musk reacted with another promise: to offer a SpaceX share to every American child from 2027.

In brief
- Anthropic plans to allocate 5% of its capital to a fund intended to finance projects of general interest.
- The system could be strengthened if the value of the company increases, but remains subject to shareholder agreement.
- Elon Musk responds by promising SpaceX stock to every American child by 2027.
- This promise would represent nearly $10.7 billion, but its terms remain unknown.
- Anthropic and Musk propose two approaches to wealth sharing, the implementation of which remains to be confirmed.
A fund could receive at least 5% from Anthropic
The company that develops Claude announced on October 18 the creation of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. This new structure would first receive 5% of the company’s capital, then could obtain additional stakes if Anthropic’s value increases.
The project, however, remains subject to shareholder approval. It is therefore not yet a fully completed transfer. The main elements announced are as follows:
- The fund is to initially receive 5% of Anthropic’s shares;
- Up to an additional 2% could be allocated after each 50% increase in the company’s value;
- Resources could finance associations or direct distributions;
- Funds should not be used to finance political contributions;
- Anthropic estimates that approximately 20% of its capital will support public causes if internal commitments are included.
This last proportion takes into account the new fund, but also the promises made by the co-founders and certain employees. The founders reportedly made a commitment to donate 80% of their personal holdings to causes of general interest.
Anthropic has explain :
We could study large donations to associations or direct distributions to certain populations.
However, the company does not yet specify the organizations, the beneficiaries, the payment schedule, nor the rules of governance of the fund.
The final value of the device will mainly depend on the valuation of Anthropic. An IPO could take it beyond $1,500 billion. In this scenario, a 5% stake would be worth around $75 billion. This figure remains an estimate, as the future price and listing conditions are not known.
Elon Musk promises SpaceX stock to every child
Elon Musk first responded to Anthropic on X: “I recommend giving the shares directly to the public”. A few hours later, he promised to offer a SpaceX share to every child in the United States in 2027.
The United States has approximately 73 million people under the age of 18. With SpaceX stock valued at $146.03 at the last quoted close, the commitment would represent nearly $10.7 billion.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every child in America”Musk said. He added that this operation would be “the first of a long series”.
The promise nevertheless remains not very detailed. Musk did not specify the eligibility criteria, the distribution procedure, or the tax consequences. He also did not indicate whether the children would receive the securities directly or whether they would be deposited in blocked accounts until they reach the age of majority.
The billionaire appears to be considering a connection to investment accounts created by the Trump administration for America’s children. However, this avenue has not been the subject of an official mechanism. Musk’s statement must therefore be presented as a public commitment, and not as an already operational program.
Two visions of sharing the wealth created by AI
Anthropic and Musk defend two different methods. Anthropic favors an institutional fund capable of selecting projects and organizing targeted aid. Musk is proposing a direct distribution of shares, which would allow children to benefit from a possible increase in SpaceX’s price.
These announcements come as concerns about artificial intelligence increase in the United States. An AP-NORC poll published at the end of September indicated that 64% of American adults believe the development of AI is too rapid. Only 8% believe that it is moving too slowly.
Anthropic wants to finance work on the effects of AI, particularly on employment, security and social risks. The company had already committed $200 million to public interest initiatives.
These promises can reach several tens of billions of dollars, but their value depends on the market and their implementation. For Anthropic, the next steps concern the integration of this system into the IPO, the shareholders’ agreement, the governance of the fund and the identification of beneficiaries. For Musk, the challenge will be to transform a publication on X into a legal, financial and tax system accessible to millions of families.
