Crypto: Mt. Gox further pushes back its repayments to 2027
Summarize this article with:

Mt. Gox is giving its lengthy reimbursement process another year. Nobuaki Kobayashi, administrator responsible for the rehabilitation of the former crypto exchange, extended the deadline from October 31, 2026 to October 31, 2027, with the authorization of the court. This is the fourth consecutive annual extension since 2023. A significant portion of creditors has already been paid. Many are still waiting.

  • This is the fourth consecutive annual postponement since 2023.
  • Many creditors remain unpaid due to incomplete procedures or processing problems.

Mt. Gox pushes back crypto refunds again

The new deadline concerns the three main categories provided for by the rehabilitation plan: basic reimbursement, early lump sum reimbursement and intermediate reimbursement. All change to October 31, 2027, Japan time. This scenario becomes almost annual. The first deadline of October 2023 was moved to 2024. Then to 2025, to 2026 and now to 2027.

Last year, Mt. Gox had already postponed the repayment of its creditors to October 31, 2026. Nobuaki Kobayashi specifies, however, that crypto repayments are “largely over” for creditors who have correctly carried out the required procedures and have not encountered any particular problems.

Not everyone is in this situation. Some creditors have still not completed the necessary procedures. Others encountered various problems during the processing of their file. The trustee therefore considers it necessary to allow sufficient time to pay the cryptos still owed. The court authorized this new extension.

More than 19,500 creditors had already received their bitcoins

Reimbursements actually began in 2024, ten years after the collapse of the crypto platform Mt. Gox. In July of that year, the old platform began returning bitcoins and Bitcoin Cash to its creditors, notably via crypto exchanges designated to receive and then distribute the assets.

The last detailed accounting published by the administrator dates back to March 27, 2025. On that date, more than 19,500 creditors had received their repayments in BTC and BCH. Payments were made in several waves in July and August 2024, then between January and March 2025.

The other files still required corrections of information, account verifications or procedures with the platforms responsible for distributing the cryptos.

On-chain data still shows significant reserve. Blockchain trackers currently value crypto wallets linked to Mt. Gox at around 34,000 BTC. The figure must be distinguished from the amount actually remaining owed to creditors: not all bitcoins held in these addresses necessarily correspond to immediate sales or distributions. Mt. Gox had still moved over 10,000 BTC as of November 2025, without the funds immediately being sent to the market.

The Bitcoin calendar loses another sensitive deadline

Mt. Gox maintains a special place in crypto history. The platform once handled a major share of global BTC trading. Indeed, it collapsed in 2014 after the disappearance of around 850,000 bitcoins. Nearly 200,000 BTC were later found.

The long legal procedure that followed explains why creditors are still waiting for part of their funds more than twelve years after the bankruptcy.

For the crypto market, the postponement also shifts a regularly monitored deadline. Each major Mt. Gox distribution fuels questions about possible selling pressure: holders recovering bitcoins purchased more than a decade ago could decide to sell part of them.

This scenario is not automatic, however. The reimbursements already made since 2024 have not alone caused the wave of sales sometimes feared. And the new deadline does not mean that all remaining payments will be made on October 31, 2027. Files can continue to be settled gradually before this date. For the remaining creditors, the Mt. Gox procedure now enters a new year.
