Switzerland is taking a new step in access to cryptocurrency investments. On October 20, 2026, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) approved the country’s first exchange-traded fund (ETF) aimed at individuals and investing directly in bitcoin. The move responds to growing interest in digital assets. However, the regulator has not announced any launch date, still leaving several questions open about the availability of this new financial product.

In brief
- FINMA approves the first Swiss ETF invested directly in bitcoin and accessible to individuals.
- The regulator notes a growing interest in investments in cryptocurrencies.
- Several suppliers have filed or announced similar requests to the Swiss authority.
- No launch date has been communicated, while risks linked to volatility remain significant.
FINMA approves first ETF for individuals
This authorization marks a regulatory step forward for the Swiss cryptocurrency market. The new fund allows retail investors to gain direct exposure to bitcoin through an exchange-traded product. Until now, FINMA had notably authorized crypto funds intended for qualified investors, with specific conditions.
In his announcementthe financial authority highlights the growing interest in investments in digital assets. Several fund providers have already filed, or announced, similar requests. However, FINMA has not revealed the identity of the issuer of the approved product. It also did not specify when investors will be able to start accessing it.
This decision comes in a market where financial products backed by cryptocurrencies are gaining visibility. In August 2025, SIX Swiss Exchange had announcement trading an iShares product linked to bitcoin. This is based on BTC held offline by Coinbase Custody International Limited. However, this announcement concerned a separate product and does not make it possible to determine the terms of the new approved ETF.
Wider access to bitcoin, despite market risks
Switzerland had already taken a first step in 2021. That year, FINMA had allowed a crypto fund intended for qualified investors and mainly invested in a basket of cryptocurrencies. The regulator then granted an exemption to the usual risk diversification rules. He notably highlighted the trading history of bitcoin and its high trading volume compared to other digital assets.
Despite this openness, the authority recalls that investments in cryptocurrencies involve significant risks. High market volatility can result in a considerable loss of invested capital. The approval of an ETF therefore does not eliminate fluctuations in the price of bitcoin. Individuals will need to consider these risks before choosing this type of investment.
This development is part of a Swiss policy relatively open to digital assets. In 2023, Lugano authorized the payment of all its municipal taxes in bitcoin and Tether USDt (USDT). This initiative placed the city among the first municipal administrations in the world to adopt this possibility.
Now the focus shifts to the next steps for the ETF launch. The identity of its issuer, its marketing date and its access methods remain unknown. If its commercialization comes to fruition, this product could expand the possibilities of regulated investment in bitcoin for Swiss individuals. Its adoption will, however, depend on its access conditions and the evolution of demand.
