What if the biggest Bitcoin Holders were AI?
Summarize this article with:

Open any official ranking, the bitcoin behemoths are called Satoshi Nakamoto, Coinbase or Strategy. Yet, in the shadows, a silent revolution is brewing. What if the next big earthquake on BTC holdings did not come from a billionaire or a sovereign wealth fund, but… from AI? Let’s explore a future where digital gold may find new, unexpected owners.

Satoshi, Binance, Strategy... What if the true hidden masters of tomorrow's Bitcoin were not humans, but AI?

In brief

  • According to Arkham, Satoshi Nakamoto holds 1.096 million BTC, Coinbase 969,000, Strategy 848,000, BlackRock 799,000, Binance 714,000.
  • The largest isolated bitcoin wallet is a Binance cold wallet (249,000 BTC, 1.24% of supply).
  • According to Strategy, MSTR stock has returned 52% annualized since August 10, 2020, compared to 38% for BTC and 16% for the S&P 500 (SPY).
  • According to the BPI, 79.1% of the responses from 36 AI models choose bitcoin to preserve purchasing power.

Who are the biggest Bitcoin holders in 2026?

According to a report from Arkham Intelligence dated September 28, 2026 on the largest BTC holders, Satoshi Nakamoto remains the largest bitcoin holder with 1.096 million BTC (5.5% of the supply), ahead of Coinbase (969,000 BTC, 4.8%), Strategy (848,000 BTC, 4%) and BlackRock (799,000 BTC, 4%, via its ETFs bitcoin).

Except that the podium changes as soon as we count by crypto wallet. The four largest individual bitcoin wallets are all exchange cold wallets, led by a Binance vault of 249,000 BTC (1.24% of the supply). Arkham clarifies that they custodian customer deposits and generally do not represent ownership of the exchange.

Rank By portfolio BTC By entity BTC

Has Strategy Beat the S&P 500 Since 2020?

According to a chart published by Strategy on October 5, 2026, MSTR stock has posted an annualized return of 52% since August 10, 2020, compared to 38% for BTC, 19% for the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) and 16% for the S&P 500 (SPY). Except that this list is that of the transmitter. The period starts on August 10, 2020, the start of the “Bitcoin standard era” according to Strategy, and the other asset classes are represented by ETFs serving as substitutes (GLD for gold, VNQ for real estate, BND for bonds), specifies the graph.

It looks more like a report card printed by a student where the grades may be accurate, but the subject and the period are the one who chooses them. On the stock side, Arkham attributes 848,000 BTC to Strategy (4% of the supply), including approximately 184,000 held by its custodian Fidelity Custody, and indicates that it has only verified on-chain 83% of these bitcoins. Arkham also notes that Strategy sold bitcoins before resuming purchases. An annualized return therefore measures a price, not a purchasing trajectory.

Could AI become the biggest bitcoin holders?

The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) placed 36 AI models against monetary scenarios, for 9,072 responses. 79.1% of those which relate to the preservation of purchasing power retain BTC, according to the BPI study of March 3, 2026. BlackRock takes up this result in its report on the machine-native economy but the framework itself. His Digital Assets Research team wrote on September 4, 2026:

These results reflect simulated model responses rather than observed agent behavior.

An AI agent is software that can plan and execute multiple tasks, including payments, on its own. On actual usage, TRM Labs estimates that agents account for between 0.6% and 7.5% of $52.7 million in x402 settlements this year, with the remainder looking more like automated scripts. But when it comes to payments between AI agents, the report first targets stablecoins. The 79.1% is the poll. Savings are usually read on the account statement. And for now, AI has an opinion on bitcoin, not a booklet.

Arkham’s podium on the largest bitcoin holders therefore remains human and institutional: Satoshi Nakamoto, Coinbase, Strategy, BlackRock. To see a portfolio of AI agents enter it will require on-chain balances and not simulation responses. BTC remains a risky asset, regardless of the identity of its holder.
