While capital is fleeing Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs at an unprecedented rate, another player is gaining attention. Hyperliquid's HYPE token continues to trade at the peak of its valuation, in contrast to a crypto market under pressure. This divergence reveals a deeper shift. In an environment where speculative liquidity is fading, protocols capable of generating real economic activity are beginning to break free from traditional cycles. Hyperliquid stands out today as the most important incarnation of this mutation.

In brief
- Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs are going through a historic crisis, with $6.5 billion in withdrawals illustrating the decline of institutional investors.
- Hyperliquid is following a completely opposite trajectory, remaining close to its all-time high and attracting positive flows despite a crypto market under pressure.
- HYPE's success is based on solid fundamentals, driven by real economic activity, specialized ETFs and growing investor interest.
- Hyperliquid tokenomics redefines valuation criteria, thanks to a token redemption mechanism directly fueled by protocol revenues.
The exodus of capital from Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs to other projects like Hyperliquid
The crypto industry is facing a drying up of its liquidity, illustrating a change in posture on the part of institutional capital allocators. According to market data shared by asset manager Coinshares, investment vehicles backed by major cryptos are experiencing continued selling pressure.
Luke Nolan, senior associate researcher at Coinshares, has drawn up an unequivocal observation regarding the current state of capital flows. He declared that crypto received “very little help from flows recently”. This lack of buying relay translates concretely into a black streak for the spot Bitcoin ETFs based in the United States, which have just aligned eight consecutive weeks of net capital outflows, thus establishing the longest sequence of uninterrupted withdrawals observed since their launch on the market.
Quantitative analysis of this disengagement reveals a marked acceleration in exits during the second quarter of the year. Furthermore, financial flow monitoring data reveal the severity of this institutional capitulation:
- $6.5 billion: this is the minimum total amount that has been withdrawn from these American funds since the beginning of May;
- $2.43 billion: this is the overall sum of net withdrawals recorded during the month of May alone;
- 4.06 billion dollars: this is the historic record for monthly net outflows which was reached during the month of June;
- 3,588 bitcoins: this is the volume of massive assets liquidated in a single week by the company Strategy in order to finance its distributions of preferred shares.
This liquidation movement was not confined exclusively to bitcoin, since Ethereum spot ETFs also showed notable signs of weakness during this same period, accentuating technical pressure on the entire market.
The rush for derivatives
This particularly austere situation for the giants of the sector has not started the upward trajectory of new generation decentralized finance. The native token of the Hyperliquid blockchain, HYPE, stands out by maintaining its value extremely close to its highest historical level, completely freeing itself from the current turbulence.
As Luke Nolan describes it, “Against these difficult market conditions, Hyperliquid (HYPE) continues to trade near its all-time high”. Such relative strength is underpinned by the rapid development of a regulated financial infrastructure dedicated to this asset, materialized by the emergence of three spot ETFs that offer investors direct access via traditional brokerage accounts. This range includes the Bitwise Hyperliquid ETF (BHYP), an industry pioneer that generates additional returns by staking one's holdings, the 21Shares Hyperliquid ETF (THYP), which tracks the performance of the FTSE Hyperliquid Index, as well as the recently launched Grayscale Hyperliquid Staking ETF (HYPG).
The commercial success of these specialized instruments contrasts point by point with the rout of traditional ETFs. HYPE-focused investment products have seen positive inflows every week since their market introduction in May, attracting approximately $161 million in net flows in the month of June alone. Currently, the three U.S. structures manage a combined total of approximately $336 million in assets, while the equivalent European-based financial products boast more than $55 million in assets under management. Although these amounts may seem modest compared to the billions of dollars of the historical leaders, their relative importance changes radically when weighted to the actual size of the protocol, confirming a transfer of interest from a fringe of investors towards targeted alternatives.
The secrets of accumulation: tokenomics indexed to productivity
The real explanation for this divergence lies in investors' perception of Hyperliquid's financial structure. Luke Nolan also specifies that “On a market cap-adjusted basis, HYPE was one of the strongest crypto ETF launches to date. Relative strength versus the broader crypto market remains evident”. This dynamic reflects a deep adherence of investors to the valuation parameters and the economic design of the asset, since the Coinshares researcher adds that it is a “strong signal that Hyperliquid tokenomics is resonating with investors”. The network integrates an automatic purchase mechanism and reduction of the circulating supply directly correlated to its use, thus offering a concrete alternative to purely speculative assets.
Also, the technical implementation of a model based on the redistribution of value changes the situation for the institutional investor. Nolan details this precise mechanic by indicating that “using 99% of platform fees to systematically buy back HYPE creates a direct link between protocol activity and token demand, giving the asset a value accumulation mechanism that stands out in today's market”. This architecture creates a perpetual organic demand engine that actively supports the price of the token as long as the platform generates transaction volume.
While bitcoin and Ethereum rely heavily on global speculative capital flows, the HYPE token relies on robust internal mechanics where the financial performance of the asset is intimately linked to the actual utility and adoption of its decentralized network.
