The crypto ecosystem is trying to find a second wind while the second largest asset on the market is going through a zone of strong structural and narrative turbulence which calls into question the very foundations of its valuation. We indeed observe a glaring discrepancy between the record technical use of the Ethereum blockchain and the prolonged stagnation of its price, still incapable of settling sustainably above past historical highs. This situation, exacerbated by internal strategic movements and large-scale restructuring, places the network at the center of all attention.

In brief
- Ethereum is going through a crisis of confidence as its activity reaches record levels, without this dynamic benefiting the price of ETH.
- Ethlabs and the Ethereum Foundation are reviewing their strategy, against a backdrop of restructuring, executive departures and questioning of the value narrative of Ether.
- Network adoption no longer translates into an increase in price, fueling questions about Ethereum's ability to capture the value created by its ecosystem.
- The decline in ETH reserves on platforms and the rise of staking could, however, weaken short sellers and pave the way for a powerful technical rebound.
Ethlabs' confession and the profound restructuring of the Ethereum Foundation
While the crypto market has just suffered its most violent decline, during a recent appearance by Ansgar Dietrichs on journalist Laura Shin's Unchained podcast, the debate on the economic usefulness of Ether took a historic turn, highlighting major factual elements:
- The confession of “value story” : Ansgar Dietrichs, a former Ethereum Foundation researcher who joined Ethlabs, expressed major doubts about the clarity of the value narrative surrounding the token. On this subject, Laura Shin underlines : “What surprised me in speaking with Dietrichs is that he openly admits that ETH still has no clear value story after five years of failing to break $5,000”;
- The role of Ethlabs: launched on June 22, 2026 by former members of the Foundation with the support of Consensys and its founder Joe Lubin, this independent laboratory has set itself the mission of bringing precise intentionality to what Ether is really supposed to accomplish;
- The Foundation's austerity cure: last May, Vitalik Buterin announced a reduction in the size of the organization, specifying that it would limit its token sales and refocus exclusively on censorship resistance, privacy and open infrastructures;
- The institutional exodus and finances: the Foundation has recorded the resignation of at least eight senior executives in the space of five months, including that of its co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang. It now only controls 0.16% of the total circulating supply, although Vitalik Buterin still holds almost 90% of his personal fortune in Ether.
These internal strategic movements and these successive reorientations demonstrate a desire for technical clarification, but they are accompanied by artistic vagueness which fuels investors' legitimate doubts about long-term governance.
The Adoption Paradox and Fundamental Market Disconnect
Behind the internal disruptions that are shaking governance circles, the behavioral analysis of the blockchain reveals a contradictory phenomenon without precedent in the history of cryptos. Technical data gathered by analytics firm CryptoQuant reveals a complete divergence between the operational viability of the infrastructure and its performance in traditional financial markets.
On the one hand, the Ethereum network is today reaching historic records in terms of daily active addresses and interactions with smart contracts, proving undeniable application adoption. On the other hand, this explosion in organic usage is not reflected at all on the price charts, where the ETH token is undergoing a severe correction of over 50% from the peak of its macroeconomic cycle.
This large technical gap is throwing institutional and retail investors into increasing uncertainty as Ethereum's traditional investment thesis is shaken to its core. Historically, increased network fees and activity on the blockchain had a direct catalytic effect on the appreciation of the value of the underlying token.
The persistent lack of correlation over this cycle shows that the accumulation of users is not enough to raise the price, and leaves the question of value capture completely open. Thus, the lack of clear direction reinforces the emergence of an overall bearish market impression and widespread skepticism about the asset's medium-term prospects.
The technical trap of short sellers
This accumulation of doubts and this ambient pessimism ended up raising what financial specialists call a “wall of worry”that is to say a psychological configuration in which markets prepare for the worst even as structural variables dry up. CryptoQuant statistics indeed show a sudden drop in immediately available liquidity, with Ether balances on trading platforms continuing to melt. This scarcity is due to the continued and significant absorption of supply by the protocol's security mechanism: more than 32% of the total Ether monetary mass, or approximately 39.5 million tokens, are now blocked and locked in staking.
Such a concentration of tokens stuck in the face of strongly bearish speculative sentiment creates a market asymmetry that is particularly dangerous for short sellers. Indeed, CryptoQuant analysts warn operators about the fragility of this technical configuration, estimating that “Historically, when speculative sentiment is this negative while organic supply is absorbed by staking, it creates a fragile environment for short sellers”.
In such an order book emptied of its substance, the slightest wave of spot purchases can trigger cascading forced redemptions on the part of investors positioned on the downside, creating a short squeeze of extreme violence, capable of mechanically propelling the price of ETH upwards.
In the long term, the implications of this double dynamic will force the ecosystem to definitively arbitrate between its use value and its financial value. If the scarcity induced by staking and record on-chain activity fail to generate sustainable price strength, Ethereum could see its financial legitimacy crumble in favor of competitors more legible for global capital.
