Summarize this article with:

Binance has officially withdrawn its MiCA license application filed with the Greek financial regulator, HCMC, a week after Reuters reported a likely rejection. The platform now announces that it wants to obtain authorization in another member state of the European Union, without specifying the name.

A Greek regulatory door is closing on Binance, while European investors look at a future that has become uncertain.

In brief

  • Binance withdrew its application for a MiCA license in Greece on June 25, 2026, ahead of the regulatory deadline of July 1.
  • The platform is seeking authorization in another EU country, not yet announced.
  • Some European users will be contacted; all funds remain accessible according to Binance.

Binance withdraws its MiCA application in Greece

Binance announced on Wednesday June 25 its withdrawal from the MiCA authorization procedure with the Hellenic Capital Markets Commission. The decision comes just seven days after the publication of a Reuters article, citing two sources familiar with the matter, that the HCMC was preparing to reject the case.

The MiCA regulation, which came into full force from December 30, 2024, requires any platform wishing to operate in the 27 Member States to obtain national approval before July 1, 2026. After this deadline, non-approved players face an interruption of their services throughout the Union.

In a press release, Binance indicated that it had “worked constructively and in good faith” with the Greek regulator, while specifying that it was “moving forward” in a manner favorable to its users. The platform filed its application in Greece in January, in particular due, in its own words, to the country's recent economic growth.

A new Member State to be found urgently

Binance ensures user funds remain accessible. The company said it was “in the process of contacting all its European users” to inform them of any required actions, available options and applicable deadlines.

However, uncertainty remains real in the short term. The platform has not identified the country in which it intends to file its next application. However, as the French episode of 2024 reminds us, where the authorities opposed the “regulatory passport” system between Member States, a license obtained in a less restrictive jurisdiction is not always enough to guarantee access to the entire market.

Binance reaffirmed its long-term European commitment: “ Europe is an important region for Binance, and our ambition to operate within a clear, fair and harmonized MiCA framework remains unchanged. » Richard Teng, general manager of the platform, formulated a similar message last week, promising communication before June 30, a deadline now exceeded by the facts.

This episode illustrates the ongoing tensions between Binance's global ambitions and European regulatory requirements. The next few weeks will be decisive in knowing in which Member State the platform will try to make a comeback.
