Apple gives up a key part of its historic recipe
According to several specialized media, Apple would have chosen Nvidia's Blackwell B200 chips hosted in Google data centers. This orientation contrasts with a philosophy defended for years. Usually, Apple controls all of its strategic components, from silicon to cloud services.
However, the tests carried out with Private Cloud Compute did not achieve the expected performance. Apple has reportedly tested an adapted version of Gemini on its own infrastructures. The result would have proven too slow to power the new generation of Siri.
Blackwell B200 processors represent one of the benchmarks in the AI industry today. Their architecture massively accelerates the inference and training of large language models. In this digital factory where every millisecond is worth gold, Apple seems to have preferred efficiency to technological pride.
A rumor already mentioned the potential purchase of 250 Nvidia NVL72 servers valued at around $4 million each. Even if not confirmed, this hypothesis illustrates the scale of the investments necessary to reposition Siri in the face of competition.
Two lost years: how Siri attempts her spectacular return
Apple presented the first bricks of this transformation during WWDC 2024. However, the promised functions never reached the general public. Siri's technical foundations were not strong enough to support this new layer of AI.
This time, Siri should access the user's personal context. The assistant will be able to consult messages, emails, documents or photos in order to provide more precise answers. Siri should also understand what appears directly on the iPhone or iPad screen.
Apple is also preparing a conversational assistant capable of competing with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A dedicated application is reportedly in development. The user could start a conversation from the Dynamic Island or use a new function called “Search or Ask”.
In this game of technological chess, Apple moves several pieces simultaneously. The firm is no longer just looking to modernize Siri. It attempts to put Apple Intelligence back at the center of the game as AI becomes the main battleground in the mobile sector.
Google and Nvidia's AI is now at the heart of the iPhone
The other major development concerns the growing role of Google in this ecosystem. Published information indicates that Apple would rely on Gemini to power part of Siri's future capabilities. A multi-year agreement has even been concluded to support future Apple Foundation Models.
Confidentiality nevertheless remains a central issue. Nvidia offers “confidential computing” mechanisms capable of encrypting data during processing. Apple could thus preserve its historic argument around the protection of personal information.
Moreover, iOS 27 should open the door to several third-party artificial intelligences. Users could select different assistants according to their preferences. Siri would retain its central position, but would no longer be the sole conversational interface in the Apple ecosystem.
As in a large software factory faced with an explosion of orders, Apple now seems to distribute the work between several specialized partners.
