107 BTC disappears in an inaccessible Bitcoin address

While bitcoin stagnates, an unknown user transferred exactly 107.1302 BTC to the historical burn address “1111111111111111111114oLvT2” this May 25, deemed inaccessible since its creation. The operation, spotted by on-chain analyst Sani, took place via five separate transactions.

On X, the latter declared: “someone just sent five transactions totaling 107 BTC to the Bitcoin burn address 1111111111111111111114oLvT2”. At the current market price, the amount represents approximately $8.2 million permanently withdrawn from circulation.

A few elements allow us to measure the scale of this operation:

  • 107.1302 BTC were sent to an unrecoverable address;
  • The funds represent approximately $8.2 million;
  • The burn wallet now contains 807,238 BTC, valued at more than $62 million;
  • The address has existed since August 10, 2010;
  • No satoshi has ever been withdrawn from this address;
  • More than 2,131 BTC had already been destroyed there in 2014 during the launch of the Counterparty protocol.

This particular address has become over the years a sort of “cemetery” symbolic of the Bitcoin network. It was used both for technical experiments and for voluntary destruction of BTC, sometimes used to demonstrate the planned scarcity of the asset. The May 26 transaction is now among the most notable burn operations observed in recent years on the Bitcoin blockchain.
