Summarize this article with:

Trading activity on cryptocurrency-based forecasting platforms has increased sharply this year, with services like Kalshi and Polymarket seeing notable growth. In this bullish context, Coinbase appears to be building its own prediction market. Images shared by a female tech researcher suggest the project is already taking shape and could involve Kalshi's participation.

Coinbase

In brief

  • Technology researcher Jane Manchun Wong revealed images showing Coinbase developing a predictive markets platform with a preliminary interface and key features.
  • The screenshots suggest that the platform could operate through Kalshi and be linked to Coinbase Financial Markets, the company's derivatives arm.
  • This development is part of Coinbase's broader plan to create a “super app” bringing together multiple types of on-chain assets and improving global accessibility.

A First Look at Coinbase Predictive Market

A Tuesday post on X by Jane Manchun Wong indicated that Coinbase is working on a prediction market. She shared several images presenting the platform's interface as well as its main characteristics.

  • One of the screenshots showed an explicit link to Coinbase Financial Markets, the derivatives division of Coinbase Global, and indicated that the service would be provided through Kalshi.
  • Other screenshots featured a familiar Coinbase-style predictive market layout, suggesting users could trade in USDC or US dollars, and participate in markets such as news or innovation.
  • The images also included an FAQ section and a guide by Coinbase explaining how the market works and what users need to know.

Hours after the publication, Wong indicated that public access to “Coinbase Predictions” had been removed following his revelation.

Coinbase's Broader Effort in Forecasting Tools

In an interview with CNBC in July, Max Branzburg, vice president of product, discussed Coinbase's plan to launch a predictive marketplace as part of creating an “all-in-one app.” He explained that the objective is to integrate all types of assets on the blockchainincluding actions and forecasting products, to prepare for a more efficient, more accessible and better connected economy on a global scale.

In this logic, in November, Coinbase strengthened its ties with Kalshi: the latter chose Coinbase Custody for the custody of its USDC.

Wong also noted that beyond predictive markets, Coinbase is developing features related to stock tradingpart of a greater integration of traditional financial tools.

Large Platforms Expand into Predictive Markets

Interest in forecasting markets is accelerating, pushing several large crypto platforms to explore this sector, either by collaborating with established players or developing their own interfaces. Gemini follows a similar approach, with a predictive market product integrated into its great app.

Co-founder Cameron Winklevoss recently expressed his enthusiasm for the feature, noting that the ability to create marketplaces around almost any event opens up vast opportunities. Last week, Gemini confirmed that it had filed an application with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to obtain designated market status.

At the same time, Trump Media recently partnered with Crypto.com to offer a predictive markets platform, illustrating the rapid rise of this sector, which has become one of the most sought-after segments of the crypto industry this year.
