Crypto: Europe dismantles a network of fraudsters
Summarize this article with:

Europe has just struck a decisive blow against one of the largest crypto scams ever dismantled. More than 600 million euros embezzled via false investment platforms, nine arrests in three countries, and a vigorous operation under the coordination of Eurojust. This cross-border raid lifts the veil on the alarming scale of criminal networks that exploit blockchain to launder funds, out of sight. A case which confirms the urgency of a legal response commensurate with the crypto challenges.

Several hooded figures are trapped in a gigantic blue light net in the shape of crypto code or blockchain. The net bears the symbol of Europe.

In brief

  • A European-scale crypto scam allowed a criminal network to embezzle more than 600 million euros.
  • Fraudsters have set up fake investment platforms promising high returns, with a professional appearance.
  • Victims were recruited through targeted advertisements, false testimonials, misleading articles and cold calls.
  • The stolen funds were laundered using blockchain, making financial flows difficult to trace.

Fraudulent platforms serving a 600 million euro scam

While the ECB shifts into high gear for the digital euro, a network of fraudsters has just been dismantled. The investigation reveals a sophisticated fraud system, set up by an international network that embezzled more than 600 million euros via fake crypto investment sites. Designed to imitate legitimate platforms, these digital interfaces offered staggering returns in order to attract savers.

Eurojust precise : “Members of the network created dozens of fake crypto investment platforms that looked like legitimate sites and promised high returns.” Victims, once committed, could never recover their transferred funds.

To reach their targets and lend credibility to their platforms, fraudsters have used a well-rehearsed arsenal of manipulation methods:

  • Targeted advertising on social networks to reach uninformed investors;
  • Cold calls made by operators posing as financial advisors;
  • Fake news articles, fabricated to simulate positive media coverage;
  • Invented or diverted celebrity testimonials, used to inspire confidence;
  • Promises of unrealistic returns, intended to trigger rapid payouts.

The money collected was then laundered using the blockchain, making financial flows difficult to trace. This technique made it possible to hide a large part of the cryptos resulting from the fraud. It was complaints from victims, faced with the impossibility of withdrawing their funds, which first alerted the French and Belgian authorities, who initiated the joint investigation.

The case, of exceptional scale, illustrates the rise of large-scale scams in the crypto universe and the level of technological sophistication now reached by certain criminal groups.

Coordinated dismantling: the transnational judicial response orchestrated by Eurojust

Eurojust, the European Union's Judicial Cooperation Agency, is credited with catalyzing an unprecedented joint response to this sprawling crypto scam.

The investigation, initiated thanks to initial collaboration between the French and Belgian authorities, led to the formation of a joint investigation team, quickly expanded to include Germany, Spain and Cyprus. “Eurojust allowed the authorities to collaborate quickly and effectively,” underlines the press release, also mentioning that the actions were coordinated from The Hague, on October 27 and 29, 2025.

The simultaneous arrests of nine suspects at their homes in Germany, Spain and Cyprus were carried out in a climate of discretion and precision, with the support of units specializing in cybercrime such as the French National Gendarmerie, the Cologne Criminal Police and the Spanish Mossos d'Esquadra. During the searches, investigators got their hands on 800,000 euros in bank accounts, 415,000 euros in cryptos (bitcoin and other assets) and 300,000 euros in cash, confirming the financial scope of the operation.

Beyond its immediate effectiveness, this dismantling marks an important step in the pan-European response capacity to financial abuses linked to cryptos. Eurojust's intervention illustrates a strengthened desire to cooperate across borders to neutralize transnational networks exploiting technological and regulatory flaws in the sector. If the case ends with arrests for the moment, it also lays the foundations for a more systematic and proactive judicial approach for the future. At a time when crypto investments are becoming more widespread, this operation could well serve as a model for action against constantly changing crime.
